When Hyundai India announced prices for the Elantra facelift in October 2019, we knew it would be a petrol-only model, at least initially. Now, information has surfaced online that suggests a BS6-compliant Elantra diesel is in the works and will arrive in Hyundai showrooms soon.

As we had reported earlier, the Hyundai Elantra diesel will be powered by the BS6 1.5-litre, four-cylinder engine that is already available in the Kia Seltos and will soon be part of the second-gen Hyundai Creta line-up. This engine is expected to produce the same output – 115hp and 250Nm of torque – in the executive sedan as it does in the midsize SUVs. And like the Creta and Seltos, the Elantra facelift will also get a 6-speed manual and 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox options.

With the pre-facelift Elantra diesel powered by a 1.6-litre engine that made 128hp and 260Nm of torque (which was considered underpowered for its class), it’ll be interesting to see how the even lower-powered BS6 diesel Elantra fares in terms of performance and efficiency.

Information available online also confirms that the Elantra BS6 diesel will be available in the same three trims as its petrol counterpart – the diesel-manual will be on offer in S and SX trims, while the diesel-automatic will be available in SX and SX(O) variants. Expect the petrol and diesel versions to have an identical features list.

Considering the BS4 Hyundai Elantra was priced between Rs 15.13-20.05 lakh, expect the BS6 Elantra diesel prices to be in the Rs 16-21 lakh region. This pricing would put it in direct competition against the Honda Civic diesel (the only other diesel-powered executive sedan that’ll be available in the BS6 era), which in BS4 form is priced at Rs 20.55-22.35 lakh.

Prices ex-showroom, Delhi
