Automotive safety systems supplier Autoliv has collaborated with Yamaha Motor to develop an airbag system for the Tricity 300 scooter. Autoliv has previously worked on similar technology with the Piaggio Group for the MP3 scooter, although that system has yet to make it to mass-market production.

The scooter is expected to go on sale in the first half of 2026

The airbag system is designed to protect riders in frontal collisions and is integrated into the inside of the front apron of the Yamaha Tricity 300. This allows it to deploy in front of the rider in the event of a collision. Autoliv states that the system was developed with everyday usability in mind and designed to preserve vehicle balance, storage space and overall riding experience.

The company also mentions that the product has undergone validation consistent with applicable development standards, including advanced simulations and full-scale crash testing.

"This collaboration represents a key development beyond our core business. It contributes to our future growth, and it is an important step in delivering on our long-term strategic agenda. It also marks a significant advancement in safeguarding motorcyclists, who traditionally have far less protection than occupants in light vehicles," said Mikael Bratt, President and CEO, Autoliv.

Typically, airbag systems for motorcyclists are found in premium riding jackets or as airbag vests. There are very few instances where this technology has been integrated into the vehicle itself, with one of the few production examples being the Honda Gold Wing Tour. The Yamaha Tricity 300 Airbag is already listed on the brand’s European website and, while prices have yet to be revealed, it represents a major step toward introducing this safety technology to more mass-market models.

That said, with the Piaggio MP3 being the other model Autoliv has collaborated on for a scooter airbag system, it does raise the question of whether this technology is simply easier and more practical to implement on a three-wheeled platform.
