Which SUV to buy?

XUV500 or Duster?

I have shortlisted the Mahindra XUV500 and the Renault Duster as my next SUV to buy. In terms of ownership, comfort, after sales and resale value, which among the two is the better bet?

Capt. Sanjeev Chauhan, via email

AAA: The big advantage of the XUV500 is that it has seven seats, is spacious and loaded with equipment. It also looks quite striking and design is the reason why it has found a lot of takers. However, we feel the Duster is a better engineered product. The Renault SUV is nicer to drive, has a far better ride and in our view would be more reliable too. The XUV500 has earned a reputation for throwing up niggling faults which the company hasn't entirely sorted out as yet. In terms of resale value both these SUVs should command a good price in the used car market as there is a strong demand for them.

BMW 320d v Audi A4 2.0TDI v Merc C250 CDI

The 320d is the sportiest of the lot and, save for some firmness, its ride is exceptional too.

Soft suspension helps the A4 2.0 TDIs low-speed ride. But there is a fair bit of up-and-down motion at speed.

The stiffly sprung C250 CDI has aflat ride and feels rock-solid at any speed.

3-series dash is neat and functional but quality not a big leap forward.

A4's cabin still looks modern and sophisticated. Quality is simply superb.

C-Class interiors feel better built than others. Dash design is a bit fussy.

Audi's spacious bench lacks thigh support.

BMW's seats are most supportive.

Rear seat space is the least in the C-Class.

C-Class seats too hard. Headrests powered.

BMW 3-series seats are most supportive.

Rear space and comfort is great too.

A4 comes with electronic handbrake

Twin sunroofs help make the C250 CDIs cabin airy.

Paddle shifters unique to the Merc.

Merc's command system looks the most dated.

320d's clear dials are typical BMW.
