At Autocar India, we are very much in the business of power. Every time the covers are pulled off a new car or motorcycle, one of the first questions that rolls off our tongues is, “How much power does it make?” We’re also fortunate enough to be in a position where, a few days after asking that question, we’re usually able to tell the story of how that power feels out in the real world. But a quick revisit to a high school physics textbook will remind you that energy can neither be created nor destroyed. Telling our stories requires us to put in a great deal of energy, and on this particular occasion, it all came from the outstandingly capable Luminous Edge Go 1500.
As we rolled out of a monsoon-washed Mumbai in the wee hours of the morning, our assignment was a familiar one: a two-day car shoot amongst the lush greenery of the Sahyadri Hills, with an overnight stay at Kamshet. But this time around, the star of our shoot wasn’t just the car; it was a 1200-watt portable power station that kept the ball rolling. As always, we had a boatload of equipment in the boot of the car. It takes a lot of gear to capture a nice car in a scenic setting in the way that we do. Cameras, lenses, drones, lights, wireless microphones, the works. But what we didn’t have to pack this time were spare batteries.
After a quick highway dash, we found ourselves nestled amongst the picturesque green forests of interior Maharashtra. Work quickly got underway, and as is usually the case on our shoots, before we knew it, batteries had depleted, memory cards were full, and stomachs were growling. Usually, this is when we’d have to get on the road and head off to find a nearby dhaba to fill up both us and our equipment. But on this day, we could simply whip out the Luminous Edge Go 1500 and plug all our devices into it while we tucked into some delicious home-packed lunches. And if induction stoves were a part of our shoot equipment at Autocar India, we could have used the Edge Go 1500 to reheat our home-packed lunches. But that shouldn’t stop you from carrying one on your next journey.
With multiple USB-A and USB-C ports on offer, there was no juggling of cables and no extension board to fiddle with. And with 1,120Wh of battery capacity, there’s more than enough juice to keep everyone’s devices topped up. There are also two 15-amp AC sockets, so all manner of devices and appliances can be powered using this one rugged, portable device, making it an essential companion for anyone spending time in the great outdoors. That 1200-watt power output figure meant that all our devices were quickly topped up and ready to go again.
Having maximised the glorious evening light to capture some stunning visuals, it was then time to call it a day and make our way towards our overnight stay. And here, once again, the Edge Go 1500 proved to be the star of the show. Having settled in, the crew was able to call upon the Edgo Go’s capabilities as an excellent Bluetooth speaker, belting out 97dB of bass and crystal clear treble through a 6-inch woofer and two 2-inch tweeters. The end result? A room that was completely filled with sound as we belted out our favourite beats to unwind from a hard day’s work. But that’s not all, the Edge Go also comes with a built-in quarter-inch guitar jack, meaning we were able to plug an electric guitar straight into the speaker and create our own tunes. What’s more, the device also comes with two wireless microphones that connect to the speaker, letting you create your own karaoke session whenever and wherever the mood strikes you.
Even at the very end of the day, the Edge Go still had enough power to carry on, which gives you an idea of the sheer energy storage capacity that it offers. And when you do eventually need to plug it in for a top-up, the fast-charging technology on board ensures a full recharge in just 90 minutes, resulting in very little downtime. You even have the option to charge the Edge Go 1500 using a solar panel, ensuring you can keep your devices powered up even when a power source is nowhere nearby.
The following morning, work carried on, with more memory cards filled up and more batteries depleted. Before commencing the 2-hour drive back home towards Mumbai, it was essential to ensure that we had all the shots we needed and that no files were corrupted. So the back of our support car was quickly converted into a data bay – crew members sat with laptops open, memory cards plugged in, and data being backed up in real-time to ensure no mishaps. And once again, the Edge Go 1500 took centre stage, allowing us to keep our laptops powered up and keeping data transfers running smoothly.
By sunset on Day 2, it had become abundantly clear to everyone in the crew that the Luminous Edge Go 1500 hadn’t simply been a power backup or a portable speaker on this shoot. It had gone well above and beyond the call of duty, morphing from a daily appliance to a silent (yet loud) production partner to the video.
The fact that the Edge Go 1500 is an absolute powerhouse really came in handy for us on our shoot. But perhaps you don’t need quite this much power for your needs. And if that is the case, Luminous also offers the Edge Go P-series – a more compact range for everyday use. There’s the P700, with 500W of output for daily essentials; the P1000, offering 800W for when you need a bit more muscle; and the P1200, also rated at 800W, but with greater capacity for those who prefer that extra buffer of backup power.
