We take a look at how the recently launched Tata Safari petrol compares with the other 3-row SUVs.

After debuting with the Sierra, Tata’s 1.5-litre Hyperion turbo-petrol engine has also made its way to the bigger Safari with a slight bump in power and torque. While specifications were revealed earlier, Tata has finally released the price list for the Safari’s turbo-petrol variants. So, how does the new petrol-powered Safari compare against its rivals, such as the Mahindra XUV 7XO, Hyundai Alcazar and MG Hector, all of which also come with a similar petrol powertrain options? Let us find out.

At 4,668mm, the Tata Safari is 108mm longer than the Alcazar but shorter than the Hector Plus and XUV 7XO by 31mm and 27mm, respectively. It is the widest and tallest offering in the segment but has the shortest wheelbase in this comparison. However, there isn’t a stark difference in the wheelbase of these SUVs.

The Safari petrol offers up to 19-inch wheels, just like the XUV 7XO, while the Hector Plus and Alcazar get either 17-inch or 18-inch ones.

With a 2.0-litre unit, the XUV 7XO gets the biggest petrol engine in this comparison; others get 1.5-litre units. Hence, it also offers a lot more power and torque than its rivals.

If we compare the 1.5-litre SUVs, the Safari produces 10hp more than the Alcazar and 27hp more than the Hector Plus. Similarly, the Safari churns out 27Nm and 30Nm more torque than the Hyundai and MG models, respectively.

These 3-row SUVs offer both manual and automatic transmission options, with all units sending power to the front wheels. While every model in this comparison offers a similar 6-speed manual transmission, the automatic options vary.

The Tata Safari’s entry-level turbo-petrol variant, priced at Rs 12.89 lakh, undercuts the Mahindra XUV 7XO by Rs 77,000, the Hyundai Alcazar by Rs 1.58 lakh and the Hector Plus by Rs 4.40 lakh.

However, its fully loaded Accomplished Ultra variant, which is exclusive to the turbo-petrol engine and costs Rs 24.69 lakh, is the most expensive in the segment. The Hector Plus has the most affordable top-spec variant, followed by the Alcazar and XUV 7XO.
