Hello. I want to purchase a big petrol automatic SUV in Chandigarh within an on-road budget of 21 lakh, which is almost 18 lakh, ex-showroom. Safety, prestige, decent mileage, low maintenance and some modern features are what I want. I will keep the car for only four years. I have zeroed in on Scorpio N Z8 Select AT, Tata Safari Pure X and Harrier Adventure X AT. Please advise. Primarily city driving with an occasional highway drive once a month.

The Mahindra Scorpio N offers a larger, more powerful 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, compared to the other two cars, and its rear-wheel drive layout will be a touch better to drive on hills, too. Additionally, being a body-on-frame SUV, it feels a touch tougher too, and more capable over bad roads. That said, since your usage is primarily in the city, the Scorpio N's ride will feel bumpier in the city. And purely for those reasons, we would recommend the two Tata SUVs.
There's very little to differentiate between the Tata Safari and Harrier, with the former having a three-row seating configuration and the latter being a 5-seater. Both drive similarly, and the 1.5-turbo-petrol engine is surprisingly powerful, refined and smooth. So, between the Safari and Tata Harrier, pick the one that appeals to you more.

Dear Autocar Team, I am planning to purchase a 7-seater SUV and would greatly appreciate your expert guidance in selecting the right vehicle. My daily running is approximately 40 km, and my key requirements are: Excellent overall comfort, especially for long drives A third row that is genuinely comfortable for adults Good road presence and premium looks that match societal standards Strong fuel efficiency and reasonable running costs Good value for money My budget is around ₹35 lakh, but I can stretch it up to ₹50 lakh if the vehicle justifies the price in terms of comfort, features, and overall experience. If most SUVs in this segment do not offer a truly comfortable third row for adults, I would appreciate your recommendation on which model provides the maximum usable third-row space. Looking forward to your expert advice.

Unfortunately, these days there is something of a void in the Rs 30-40 lakh price bracket, with all the models that existed here having either moved into a higher price range or been discontinued altogether. At the lower end of things, you could consider the Tata Safari, which is spacious, well-equipped, and crucially, very comfortable for all passengers. Its 2.0-litre diesel engine is a little noisy, but it is strong and efficient if driven carefully. At the other end of the spectrum, in the Rs 50 lakh range, is the MG Gloster. It is soon to be succeeded by the MG Majestor, but even the outgoing car is big on space, comfort and luxury, with a third row that's genuinely usable. It too has a strong 2.0-litre diesel engine that provides effortless torque to move this large vehicle.

I am planning to buy a car for my family of 6. I am not very sure which car I should go with, but I have explored a couple of options. As I am looking to buy a car with good looks and power, I resonate with the Tata Safari and Mahindra XUV700. Do you have any better options? Also, I don’t mind buying it second-hand too. Please help.

From a pure six-seater comfort point of view, the Tata Safari is the better option. It offers a more comfortable third row, and thanks to the sliding middle row, you get more flexibility to create additional legroom and knee room for passengers sitting in the back. The XUV700’s third row is more suitable for children, and that too mainly for shorter journeys. This limitation remains even if you look at the used examples of the earlier versions. If you want an even better six-seater in terms of overall comfort, you can also consider the Toyota Innova HyCross. It offers a full-size third row and is comfortable enough even for adults, making it a stronger option if third row usability is a priority.

I currently own a 2021 Hyundai Venue (iMT) Petrol. I usually travel to my hometown in Punjab once a month, and the rest of the time, I drive within the city. I am looking to buy an SUV with good aesthetics and build quality; the first car that comes to mind is the Tata Harrier. I was eagerly waiting for the petrol variant, and this year, that wish finally came true. I am planning to purchase the Fearless+ variant in white. However, considering Tata's reputation for manufacturing defects and resale value, should I stick with my choice, or would you suggest a better option, like a Mahindra XUV700? My priority is safety, looks, average maintenance cost and mileage should fall between 12-18kmpl (which is usually what every car offers right now). Thanks in advance

If you have your heart set on the Tata Harrier, you should go for it. It has great road presence, you like the aesthetics of it, and it feels very tough, thanks to its Land Rover-sourced underpinnings. The new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine is a winner too, managing to be both powerful and smooth at the same time. If you're after the automatic variant, it's a very smooth gearbox too, if not a particularly sporty one. Tata's reliability has improved in recent years, but the cars aren't free from issues, particularly with the electronics. That said, Mahindra is not too far behind in this regard. It's luck of the draw, and we don't think it's worth putting off the purchase just for that if you otherwise have your eye on it. As for the mileage, it's unlikely to get anywhere near 12-18kpl (the Mahindra is even further off), as it is a heavy SUV with a turbocharged petrol engine, but driven carefully, you could get into the low double digits.
