I am a 77-year-old senior citizen. I have back issues, and my wife is also a senior citizen. We find it difficult to get in and out of certain cars. Could you suggest the most suitable options within a budget of Rs 10 lakh?

In terms of an elevated seating position and ease of getting in and out, the Tata Punch is the best fit within your budget. Its doors open wide, and the seats are comfortable and set high, so you step into it rather than down into it. The drawbacks are that the engine isn’t the most refined, and Tata’s service experience can be hit or miss in some areas.

Alternatively, the Hyundai Exter automatic is a good choice too. The high, chair-like seats and wide-opening doors make getting in and out easy. The seating position isn’t quite as high as the Punch’s, so it is worth trying both to see which works best for you. On the plus side, the engine is very refined, the AMT is one of the smoother-shifting units in the segment, and Hyundai has a strong reputation for after-sales service.

If you want something that is even easier to live with on a tight budget, look at the Maruti Wagon R AMT. The tall-boy design is excellent for seniors. Just know that while it is a great city car, it is not particularly well-suited to highway driving.

Pick the Honda Amaze automatic. Honda’s smoother automatic crawls and creeps cleanly in traffic, and the speed modulation will feel more natural, whereas the AMT can feel jerky at times.Your parents will be happier in the Amaze, too. The rear seat is wider with a longer cushion, and the backrest angle is friendlier, the big boot will also be handy for family trips.Over 10 years, Honda’s proven 1.2 petrol and simpler ownership have impressed. Service quality is more consistent, and routine upkeep tends to be lower, which matters when you plan to keep the car for a long time.Where the Punch might be better is with its smaller dimensions and slightly higher seating, which would be better for first-time drivers. But given the benefits the Amaze offers for your usage, we'd recommend it as you would soon get used to the slightly larger dimensions of the Honda.

I have booked Tata Pure Plus ICNG. This is my first car, and I have given an amount and purchased insurance as well. Now, yesterday the government did e85 roll out. My concern is what will happen to my vehicle. I have not given Parivahan otp to book the number plate of the car. Should I take a refund? Is it possible I have given around 8 .9 lakh.

There is no need to panic or cancel your booking because of the E85 announcement. The recently launched E85 fuel is meant only for flex-fuel vehicles specifically designed to run on up to 85 percent ethanol. The Tata Punch iCNG is not a flex-fuel vehicle, so it will continue to run on regular petrol, CNG and the currently mandated ethanol blends as specified by Tata. E85 is not something that will suddenly replace regular fuel at all pumps.In fact, even today, most new petrol cars sold in India, including the Punch, are engineered to handle the current E20 petrol that is available in the market. The move to E85 is a separate initiative and requires specially developed flex-fuel vehicles.The bigger picture is that you have chosen a Punch iCNG, which is already relatively future-proof from a fuel-cost perspective. CNG will remain widely available, and your running costs will be significantly lower than those of a comparable petrol vehicle.

For mostly city use and an upgrade from your 2015 Grand i10, it’s the easiest step up: higher seat and better ground clearance for speed breakers, yet small enough to park and thread through traffic without stress. The light controls and smooth petrol make daily commutes simple, and Hyundai’s wide service network will feel familiar. In your budget, you can land a lower or mid manual trim, so it fits the budget without feeling bare-bones.What helps you most is comfort and convenience in the city. The cabin is more airy than your i10, the ride handles rough patches better, and running 750-800 km a month, petrol makes far more sense than stretching for a diesel or an EV.

Pick the Mahindra XUV 7XO. At around Rs. 20 lakh, it gives you the best mix of space, strong performance and safety, and it is far easier to live with every day than the Thar Roxx while being a better value than a low or mid Hector variant. You also get both petrol and diesel choices, so you can match it to your running.Fuel choice is simple. Go petrol if most of your use is in the city or your running is under about 1,200 km a month. It is quieter, has fewer policy worries, and resale stays safe even if some cities tighten diesel rules. Pick diesel only if you drive long highway distances often, want a longer tank range, or haul a full family with luggage regularly.The only real downside with the XUV 7XO is that the fanciest features push you beyond Rs. 20 lakh, and there may be a wait period. If you mainly want a rugged toy, the Thar Roxx is great, but for family life, the XUV 7XO fits better.

Our first recommendation would be the new Venue Turbo Petrol Manual. It strikes the best balance for your priorities. The turbo petrol engine is punchy and enjoyable to drive, fuel efficiency is respectable, and Hyundai's ownership experience is generally hassle-free. The latest Hyundai Venue is also more spacious than before, particularly in the rear seat, and feels like a very well-rounded first car. For value, we would look at the SX Turbo Manual, which gets a good mix of features without stretching the budget too much.Our second choice would be the Mahindra XUV 3XO. If outright performance and rear seat space are your priorities, it is arguably the strongest car here. The turbo petrol engine is lively, the rear bench is among the widest in the segment, and it feels more substantial than the Venue. The downside is that fuel efficiency is not as strong, and the boot is one of the smallest in the class. The MX2 Pro or AX5 Manual would be the variants to consider, depending on your budget.The Tata Nexon would be our third choice. It remains a good all-round package with decent space, a strong feature list and good road presence. However, compared to the newer Venue and 3XO, it does not feel quite as polished, and neither the driving experience nor the ownership proposition is as compelling.

I am planning to purchase a new automatic car and am confused between the Honda Amaze ZX CVT and the Skoda Kylaq Signature Plus AT. My usage will be around 90% city driving, primarily for office commuting between Dwarka, Delhi and my office near IFFCO Chowk, Gurugram (approximately 25 km one way). However, I will not be driving daily, as I often use the Metro as well. The car will also be driven by my 69-year-old father, so ease of driving, comfort, visibility, ingress/egress, and reliability are important considerations. Our previous car was an Alto K10 Manual, so this will be our first automatic car and a significant upgrade. Considering my usage pattern, family profile and the fact that we intend to keep the car for a long period for around 10 years, which of these two would you recommend?

Based on your requirement, we would recommend the Honda Amaze ZX CVT over the Skoda Kylaq Signature+ AT. The reason is that your priorities are not outright performance or driving excitement. You are looking for a car that will spend 90% of its life in city traffic, will also be driven by your 69-year-old father, and is expected to stay with the family for around 10 years. In that context, Amaze's strengths line up perfectly with your requirements. The CVT is smoother than the Kylaq's torque converter automatic in stop-and-go traffic, visibility is excellent, the car is easy to place on the road, ingress and egress are straightforward, and Honda's long-term reliability record is hard to fault. Coming from an Alto K10, it will already feel like a substantial upgrade in comfort, refinement and features.The Kylaq Signature Plus AT is the more desirable car from an enthusiast's perspective. The 1.0 TSI turbo petrol has more punch, the higher seating position is nice, and the overall package feels more substantial. However, it is also a larger vehicle to manoeuvre, and while the automatic is good, it is not quite as seamless in everyday traffic as Honda's CVT.Another point in Amaze's favour is that the ZX variant gets Honda Sensing ADAS, which adds useful safety features without making the car complicated to operate. Since your father will also be driving it, that extra layer of safety is a nice bonus.
