Hi everyone, I am planning to buy my first car, and I will also be learning to drive with this car. My budget is around Rs 8-9 lakh. I am looking for a car with good ground clearance, as the roads in my area are not always in good condition. My usage will be relatively low, at around 6-7 km per day, with an occasional long road trip of around 800-1,000 km once every 6-7 months. I live in an eastern state, where both heat and rainfall can be quite extreme. The car will be parked in an open parking area, so it will have significant exposure to the sun and rain. Since this will be my first car and I am still learning to drive, I am confused about whether I should go for a manual or AMT. Reliability, ease of driving, ground clearance and reasonable maintenance costs are important to me. Considering my usage and conditions, which cars should I consider in the Rs 8-9 lakh budget? Also, would you recommend a manual or AMT for a first-time driver with this type of usage? I would really appreciate suggestions based on practical ownership experience.

Go for the Maruti Suzuki Fronx 1.2 petrol manual. It is the most sensible first car for your usage and budget. Maruti’s service network is strong across the country, which is important in your region, and the car is easy to drive and forgiving for a learner.

With your daily running of 6-7 km and only occasional long trips, a manual makes more sense than an AMT. AMTs are not as smooth as proper automatics, and at your usage level the cost and complexity are not justified.

The Fronx’s higher ground clearance will help with bad roads and waterlogging during heavy rains, and Maruti’s paint and weather sealing are generally good for cars parked outdoors. This Maruti car is also compact enough to park and manoeuvre, which is important for a first-time driver.

I am planning to buy a car this year around Diwali or at the year end. Firstly, what would be the best time to buy a car with maximum discounts and overall best buying experience? I am looking to buy a big-5 seater car. Since I am soon going to be a dad, so a comfortable and safe car for the family is my priority along with super good fuel efficiency, low maintenance and very good ownership. From usage perspective, I am looking for long travels once a month or two and daily office commute. On average, my monthly running would be 3000-4500 km. I can start from around 8 lakhs and stretch up to 15 lakh (on-road price) but not go beyond that. A low budget car is also not an issue if mileage, safety and good space is there. Around 12 lakhs is the sweet spot. From features point of view as long as the car has also essentials, it's fine. Basically, I want a car in this budget with no-nonsense features. Feel good features that can be barely used can be skipped if it saves my money. I am planning to keep this car for at least next 10 - 12 years. A few cars that are currently in trend and are on my mind include Grand Vitara, Victoris, Duster, Nexon, Curvv and Hyryder. But please let me know which is the best car according to you and which is the variant that I should go for (model, engine, fuel) and the best time to buy that car. Also please suggest from perspective of e20 fuel debate. Thank you so much.

With a monthly running of 3,000-4,500 km, you are well above the threshold where fuel costs become a major factor. Diesel is the most sensible choice here, especially given your mix of daily commuting and long-distance travel. It will deliver significantly better fuel efficiency and lower running costs over the long term, and modern diesel engines are well suited to both city and highway driving.That narrows down the choice to just Tata Nexon and Curvv from your shortlist. However, we'd recommend you consider the Mahindra XUV 3XO diesel instead, for its smoother, more refined and more powerful diesel engine. The XUV 3XO is also a lot more spacious and comfortable than the Tata offerings, although its boot is a bit small. It offers a big car feel in a sub-4-metre footprint. A Kia Syros diesel is an excellent option if you are ok with its quirky styling. Since this a low-seller, you're likely to get a great deal on it too.The best time to buy is typically around December, when manufacturers and dealers are keen to clear inventory and discounts are at their strongest.

Help me choose the right car for my usage. Please be practical and challenge my assumptions. My situation: I am 31 and work as a software developer. The CNG premium is around Rs. 1 lakh, and the nearby village pump may open around Diwali, but this is not guaranteed. 3. What real-world mileage can I expect with the AC on? 4. Please consider loan interest, fuel costs, maintenance, depreciation, and resale value. 5. Is the Brezza worth the extra money? 6. Give me one final choice and tell me what I should avoid.

It is also backed by Maruti's widespread support network, and the ownership experience is likely to be fuss-free. The petrol engine is smooth, refined and well suited to your running of under 1,000 km a month, where the hybrid premium is harder to justify.The Mahindra XUV 7XO is a strong alternative with a more powerful engine and a more feature-rich cabin, but the HyCross has the edge on space, comfort and long-term ownership experience.The Hyundai Alcazar and Kia Seltos are good cars, but they do not offer the same level of space or comfort, and the Renault Duster is more of a driver's car than a family car. The Toyota car mentioned above is the car you will be happiest with after five years of ownership.
