I want to buy my first bike. I already have an Activa but I would like to travel around 300-600 km once in a month or once in two months for 20- 30 km a day in city. I wanted to travel in North India sometimes which may include a Ladakh trip as well. So, I need a bike that is suitable for all of my requirements under a budget of around 3 to 3.5 lakh. I have Suzuki V-Strom SX, Triumph Speed 400, Meteor 350 and all such kinds of bikes in mind. I've checked each and every bike specifications but I couldn't decide .So please help me out in choosing my first bike.

If you can live with its tall 835mm seat height, the 350cc Triumph Scrambler 400 X seems like a bike that would suit your needs very well. Even the Speed 400 will handle all of this but the Scrambler brings an effortless ability to tackle rough roads which its road-focused sibling doesn't.

You should also check out the Royal Enfield Scram 440 because it will be similarly capable over longer distances and bad roads but it does have a lower performance ceiling owing to its less powerful engine and heavier kerb weight.

A test ride of these 2 should help you decide which one suits your needs better.

I’m stuck between the CB350RS and Scram 440 and would love to hear from people who have ridden either or both. I’m primarily looking for a daily city bike, with occasional long rides and weekend tours. I commute around 26km every day through peak Bangalore traffic, and the roads aren’t exactly great either, with plenty of potholes, broken stretches and stop-and-go traffic. I had initially shortlisted the CB350RS because I really liked its character, relaxed nature, thump, refinement and mileage. It feels like a bike I’d genuinely enjoy riding every day. However, I felt it was slightly lacking when I needed to make quick overtakes or manoeuvre through gaps in traffic. It isn’t necessarily slow, but it doesn’t feel particularly eager when you need that extra shove. Then I rode the Scram 440, and that’s where the dilemma started. I absolutely loved its character and the way it delivers power. It felt much easier to make quick overtakes and manoeuvre through traffic. The seating position and suspension also felt significantly better suited to Bangalore’s terrible roads. On the other hand, I’m still drawn to the CB350RS because I really like its overall feel and calmer, more relaxed character. So, which one would you pick for this kind of usage? I’d especially appreciate feedback from anyone who has owned or ridden both.

From what you've told us, it seems like you're leaning more towards the Royal Enfield Scram 440, so we'd suggest you go with that bike. The Scram can be a relaxed and mellow machine when you want to just cruise, but if you need the added power to make an overtake, it fares better than the Honda CB350RS. An added bonus is that the Scram is more comfortable over bad roads because of its ADV lineage.

Sir, at present I own a Royal Enfield Thunderbird X 350. I have always dreamt about Himalayan. My height is 5'2" and I weigh approximately 60 kg. I am 58 years. Do you think I can ride Himalayan 440, especially for long distance on a highway? Otherwise, can you please suggest me some other bike from Royal Enfield family, my budget is up to 2.5 lakhs. Thanks in advance.

The Royal Enfield Himalayan 440 is one of the most approachable ADVs on the market and once you get accustomed to its size and weight, you should be able to comfortably manage it. Its only at slower speeds in the city when you're navigating through traffic when the weight and size will be a problem but otherwise on the highway at constant speeds on a long tour, you'll hardly feel the weight. If you want something similar but with an even friendlier seat height, the Scram 440 is another good option and its top variant is the one to go for as it comes with alloy wheels and tubeless tyres. The Guerrilla 450 is another option from the RE stable that you should consider. It brings properly energetic performance and sporty handling to the table as well as a fancier colour TFT display, making it a step up in almost all ways to the relatively more spartan 440s. Its super friendly 780mm seat height is lower than both of the aforementioned bikes. Take a test ride of all three, see which one you gel with most and then make your decision. Do bear in mind that all three will be above Rs 2.50 lakh (on-road), so you will have to extend your budget.

I currently own a Hunter 350 and am considering buying a new bike. I ride around 25 to 30 km a day, mostly in the city with moderate traffic. I find the Hunter 350 a little underpowered for my liking, so I’m looking for something with better performance. My budget is around Rs 3 lakh, but I can stretch it to Rs 5 lakh if a twin-cylinder bike is worth considering.

Since you already have a Hunter 350 and want more power for your daily commutes, stepping up to the Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450 would be the logical move. The Guerrilla has a punchy engine with a strong mid-range which makes for a brisk yet effortless commuting partner. While the Guerrilla has engaging handling, its suspension is also reasonably pliant to tackle the daily grind. Given that you have experience dealing with the Royal Enfield sales and service network, your ownership of the Guerrilla should also be fairly straightforward and trouble-free. If you want a twin-cylinder experience, then the Aprilia Tuono 457 special edition should be on your radar. The Tuono has sublime handling, a characterful engine that belts out a lovely soundtrack and its also a fairly uncommon sight on our roads, giving you an air of exclusivity. Do bear in mind that the Aprilia dealer network is quite small and service will likely be pricier than its single-cylinder rivals.

I am almost a beginner driver and planning to buy a used automatic car under a budget of around Rs. 8.5 lakh. My usage will be roughly 70% city and 30% highway driving. My main priorities are a decent automatic and good safety. I have ended up considering a 2023 Tata Punch AMT, but I’ve heard that it can feel underpowered and may not inspire much confidence while overtaking on highways. I have also heard about the AMT being jerky. Would love to hear from anyone who has owned or regularly driven a Punch AMT. How has your experience been, especially with highway driving?

The Tata Punch AMT is a city car, thanks to its high seating and light controls, but your concerns are valid. The AMT gearbox is not very smooth, and the 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine feels underpowered on the highway, especially during overtaking.Given your budget of Rs 8.5 lakh and your 70% city, 30% highway usage, we would recommend looking at a used Maruti Suzuki Brezza AT or a used Toyota Urban Cruiser AT instead. Both are essentially the same car underneath, powered by a 1.5 petrol engine and offer a proper 4-speed torque converter automatic gearbox, which is much smoother and easier to live with than an AMT.You could also consider a used example of the Nissan Magnite Turbo CVT - it is newer, easy to drive, has a smooth automatic and the turbo-petrol makes performance feel effortless.

I am going to buy my first car. I am a new learner and my daily commute is around 40km in village area road with occasional long trip that are around100-150 km during weekend. So, suggest me a 4m car with decent mileage and safety rating. My monthly running is between 1000 and 1300 km. I prefer automatic. Also what will be the budget range. For a first car and a Rs. 10 lakh annual salary, a sensible target would be around Rs. 9-11 lakh on road. Since you stay at home and have relatively low fixed expenses, you can stretch a little if required, but there is no need to spend Rs. 13-14 lakh simply because the budget allows it.The Exter suits your usage well. It is compact and easy for a new driver to place on the road, has good visibility and ground clearance for village roads, and the AMT makes a 40km daily commute much easier. Your 1,000-1,300km monthly running also makes a petrol automatic perfectly reasonable.The Maruti Suzuki Fronx AMT is worth considering if highway performance and mileage are more important, while the Tata Punch AMT is another option if safety and rough-road ability are higher priorities. The Exter, however, offers a good balance of ease of driving, comfort and ownership costs.

Hi, I am 35 years old. I have a sitting job in IT. Could you please suggest most comfortable bike in suspension considering I suffer from back and neck pain at work that increases while riding in city as well as my height (169 cm) and weight (68 kg) on city roads in India. Please consider city potholes. I will have to travel 20km daily in weekdays till Friday and on weekends, it will be 200 km. Earlier, I had Yamaha FZ S FI but I no longer own it. Now I own my father's Hero Super Splendor XTEC only. I was checking out Royal Enfield Classic 350, Meteor 350, Honda CB350 H'ness, Triumph Speed 400, etc. I had taken the test drive of Royal Enfield Classic 350 BS6 (2024 Model), but for my weight, during road bumping, it directly transfers shock and and vibration to my back. Please suggest your valuable feedback.

In our experience, all of the bikes you have shortlisted (aside from the Meteor to some extent) have proven to be adept at shielding the rider from road imperfections. Since you have mentioned that the Classic isn't doing the trick for you, perhaps it could mean that for your physique a bike with a different riding position may be the solution. Take a test ride of the Hunter 350, which now has very absorptive suspension and a similar feel from the engine. You should also consider the Harley-Davidson X440 (splurge for the nicer looking T if you can) as that bike also has a comfortable suspension setup and seating posture.
