I want to upgrade my car from a Tata Tiago to an automatic SUV with good build quality and decent mileage. My budget is 12-14 lakhs. 90% city drive and 10% highway. Either petrol or hybrid. My annual running is 12000 km. Please suggest which automatic car I should buy as per my requirements.

The Skoda Kylaq Automatic would be the top recommendation for your requirements. Coming from a Tiago, the Kylaq will feel like a substantial upgrade in terms of performance, refinement, ride quality and overall sophistication. Its turbo-petrol engine paired with the automatic gearbox is smooth and responsive in city driving, while also being reasonably efficient for a compact SUV. Given that 90% of your usage is in the city, it strikes an excellent balance between ease of driving, comfort and fuel economy.

The Mahindra XUV 3XO Automatic would be the second choice. It offers a more spacious cabin, especially for rear-seat passengers, and comes loaded with features. However, despite being roomier inside, it has a smaller boot than the Kylaq, and real-world fuel efficiency is unlikely to be quite as good.

As for hybrids, there are currently no strong hybrid SUVs available within your Rs 12-14 lakh budget. Models such as the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder Hybrid and Maruti Grand Vitara Hybrid sit in a significantly higher price bracket.

I want to upgrade to a new automatic car from my existing Tata Tiago. My preferences are a compact SUV, good build quality and decent mileage. I am considering either the Tata Nexon DCA Petrol or the Skoda Kylaq AT. My running is 90% city and 10% highway or long journeys. My monthly running is around 1,000km. For predominantly city driving, its turbo-petrol engine and torque-converter automatic gearbox offer a smoother and more natural driving experience than the Nexon's DCA. It is also likely to be more fuel efficient in real-world conditions and comes with a larger boot, making it the more practical choice for weekend trips.The Tata Nexon DCA remains a solid option with its strong build quality, comfortable ride and feature-rich cabin. However, the Kylaq feels more polished to drive and is better suited to your usage pattern.

Currently, I own a 2018 Toyota Innova Crysta manual. It is very comfortable on long journeys, comparable to any car. My commute is almost entirely on highways (around 80%), but I feel the steering is a little heavy in city driving. I would like to buy another new car with a torque converter (TC) or DCT automatic gearbox in the mid-range, below 15 lakh, and I am an enthusiastic driver. Pick the Mahindra XUV 7XO. At around Rs. 20 lakh, it gives you the best mix of space, strong performance and safety, and it is far easier to live with every day than the Thar Roxx while being a better value than a low or mid Hector variant. You also get both petrol and diesel choices, so you can match it to your running.Fuel choice is simple. Go petrol if most of your use is in the city or your running is under about 1,200 km a month. It is quieter, has fewer policy worries, and resale stays safe even if some cities tighten diesel rules. Pick diesel only if you drive long highway distances often, want a longer tank range, or haul a full family with luggage regularly.The only real downside with the XUV 7XO is that the fanciest features push you beyond Rs. 20 lakh, and there may be a wait period. If you mainly want a rugged toy, the Thar Roxx is great, but for family life, the XUV 7XO fits better.

I am confused between buying Skoda Kylaq and Kia Seltos. Please suggest.

Buy the Kia Seltos. It is simply easier to live with for most buyers, thanks to a much wider service network and many more variant and powertrain choices, including good automatics across a wider price range. For daily city runs with the odd highway trip, the Seltos will feel like the more complete package and it has a more spacious and premium cabin. The Skoda Kylaq will suit you only if you really enjoy driving. It feels tighter and more confidence inspiring on the move, and the steering has more feel. If you plan long, frequent road trips and care more about how it drives than gadgets, that’s where the Kylaq shines. The flip side is fewer dealers and fewer variant choices.

My priorities are: 1) Performance, 2) Mileage and ownership cost, 3) Features, and 4) Rear-seat and boot space. Please advise and suggest the best-value variant as well. I am inclined towards a manual.

Our first recommendation would be the new Venue Turbo Petrol Manual. It strikes the best balance for your priorities. The turbo petrol engine is punchy and enjoyable to drive, fuel efficiency is respectable, and Hyundai's ownership experience is generally hassle-free. The latest Hyundai Venue is also more spacious than before, particularly in the rear seat, and feels like a very well-rounded first car. For value, we would look at the SX Turbo Manual, which gets a good mix of features without stretching the budget too much.Our second choice would be the Mahindra XUV 3XO. If outright performance and rear seat space are your priorities, it is arguably the strongest car here. The turbo petrol engine is lively, the rear bench is among the widest in the segment, and it feels more substantial than the Venue. The downside is that fuel efficiency is not as strong, and the boot is one of the smallest in the class. The MX2 Pro or AX5 Manual would be the variants to consider, depending on your budget.The Tata Nexon would be our third choice. It remains a good all-round package with decent space, a strong feature list and good road presence. However, compared to the newer Venue and 3XO, it does not feel quite as polished, and neither the driving experience nor the ownership proposition is as compelling.
