I want to buy an automatic car for city driving, mainly for commuting between home and office. My budget is ₹7 lakh.

In this price range, you always have to choose badge versus value, as there are some exceptional executive sedans and SUVs available for the same price as entry-level cars with luxury badges on them. If you're after a luxury badge specifically, we recommend the Mercedes-Benz A-Class Limousine, which is excellent value for money, or if you want an SUV, the Audi Q3, which is a little dated now. But offers the best overall package of performance, practicality and comfort. However, for the same money, the Toyota Camry offers far more space comfort and mileage thanks to its strong hybrid powertrain, for similar money. And similarly, the Skoda Kodiaq or Volkswagen Tayron offer far greater space, practicality and power than a similarly priced luxury-branded SUV. However, these big, seven-seat SUVs with 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engines are quite thirsty and could burn a hole in your pocket at the fuel pumps. However, if you're accustomed to the running costs of an Innova Crysta 2.7 petrol, then these won't be too far off. Of all these, we recommend the Toyota Camry hybrid for its all-encompassing offering of comfort, luxury, space and mileage at this price.

Go for the Tata Punch Adventure MT. With your 60% city/40% highway mix and ₹10 lakh budget, it offers a compact footprint perfect for the city but with decent levels of space inside. The smaller size also makes it quite easy to manage and get used to in case you are new to driving. The ride and handling balance is also good, with the ability to offer a comfy ride at low city speeds and good highway stability too, which will be handy for your mixed usage.Your monthly 800 km driving distance is fairly modest, so petrol would be a good option, keeping things simple and avoiding CNG queueing and boot space loss. Although with Tata Motors using the twin CNG cylinder setup, the boot space is still quite good. So if you still feel like opting for CNG, you won't have to put up with a major compromise in space.

Looking at your budget and your requirement for space - especially headroom - we would recommend you look at the Hyundai Exter. The car has plenty of head as well as legroom at the front and the rear, too. The rear in particular is very good with ample room to stretch your feet out below the front seats, and the rear seatbacks are a bit more reclined than normal, effectively creating even more headroom. The Exter is also an easy and comfy car to drive with a light steering that weighs up as you drive faster. With your Rs 11 lakh budget, you will also be able to purchase the top-end version and would thus enjoy all of the features on offer.
