Please suggest a good value-for-money car under Rs. 20-25 lakh that is suitable for a family of 7 with good reliability and service. I am looking for a family-oriented car, 80% for city and 20% for highway. I am confused between EV and diesel. Should I consider the Mahindra Scorpio N or the XUV 7XO?

With 80% city use, a family of seven and a Rs 20-25 lakh budget, the Mahindra XUV 7XO is a good choice. If you can install a charger at home, though, the Mahindra XEV 9S could be a great alternative since your usage is primarily in the city. The base Pack One Above with the larger 79kWh battery pack fits within your budget and comes with all the essential comfort and tech features. In our real-world tests, we managed a combined 477.5km on a single charge, though that figure will drop sharply on the highway with a full load of passengers and luggage. Your highway trips will therefore need some planning around charging stops.

If that seems like too much effort, then the XUV 7XO diesel automatic makes the most sense. It feels easier to drive in town than the Mahindra Scorpio N, with lighter controls and a smoother driving experience. Ride comfort and cabin noise levels are better, too, which your family will appreciate.

A couple of things to note: with all three rows up, boot space is limited. The third row is also a bit tight for taller passengers, so check if it works for your family.

Alternatively, consider the Kia Carens Clavis/Carens Clavis EV. Their smaller footprint makes them easier to drive and park in the city, and the third row is more spacious than in the XUV 7XO/XEV 9S.

The technical risk is low, while the policy risk is manageable.The XUV 7XO's petrol engine is E20-compliant, which means it is engineered to handle a 20% ethanol blend without any issues. The main impact of a higher ethanol blend is a slight drop in fuel efficiency and, over a very long period, some additional wear on certain rubber components in the fuel system. These parts are generally inexpensive to replace.At present, there is no official roadmap for moving beyond E20. Even if India eventually adopts E25, E27, or E30, manufacturers would almost certainly issue clear guidance and support for existing vehicles. The greater uncertainty lies in government policy rather than in the vehicle's engineering.Waiting indefinitely for a hypothetical future policy change is not a practical ownership strategy, particularly when the XUV 7XO is otherwise a strong long-term choice. Overall, the recommendation would be to buy the XUV 7XO today rather than let ethanol policy uncertainty dictate a 10-15-year ownership decision.

I currently own a 2020 Maruti Wagon R 1.2 Manual and am planning to upgrade. I live in Mangalore, where bumper-to-bumper traffic is rare, so I would prefer a diesel automatic. I'm confused about whether to buy a 5-seater or a 7-seater. I feel a 5-seater like the Hyundai Venue Diesel AT might be enough, but I'm also considering the Kia Seltos. If neither seems like the right choice, the Mahindra XUV 7XO AX3 Diesel AT is my only 7-seater option. My family consists of my parents, my wife, and our two children (one is 4 years old). We manage comfortably in our Wagon R and go on long rides as well, so I'm unsure if a 7-seater is really necessary. I'm also open to considering an EV, but range is an issue during long rides. The facelift also introduced a more polished suspension setup, making it a big upgrade over the previous XUV700. The only drawback is that the third row is a bit cramped for adults, and its size can make it less convenient to drive in the city.Alternatively, consider the Kia Carens Clavis. Its diesel-automatic powertrain is also refined, and its third row is more accommodating for adults than the XUV 7XO's.
