I am planning to buy my first family car strictly under 6.5 lakh - 7 lakh (on-road) in Karnataka. My usage will be mainly local commute of 15-18 km daily and highway trips of approximately 300 km to hometown. I'm looking for a practical, reliable and low-maintenance vehicle, and therefore, I am leaning towards petrol with manual transmission. Features that I'm looking for include decent AC, all-4 power windows and central locking along with sufficient rear seat space for 2 adults and a boot big enough to accomodate 2-3 trolley bags. I have shortlisted Maruti Wagon R VXi 1.0 and Maruti Swift LXi. We have excluded Baleno as it wouldn't fit our parking space. I'm also excluding Renault and Citroen as these brands do not have a presence near where I live. I do not wish to consider Tata due to on-going bad experience with service that my friends are facing. Please share your opinion about these two models or any other reliable car that I might be missing out on.

Go for the Maruti Suzuki Swift LXi. Your usage pattern is a mix of daily city commuting and occasional 300km highway runs, and the Swift is the better all-rounder for this. It offers a more comfortable ride, better highway stability and a more refined driving experience compared to the Wagon R. The rear seat has enough space for two adults, and the boot is big enough to suit your requirement of carrying 2-3 trolley bags. The Wagon R is a very practical city car with a tall-boy design and good headroom, but it is not as comfortable or as confidence-inspiring on the highway. Both cars are equally reliable and low-maintenance, but the Swift feels like a more complete car overall.

Should I go with new Maruti Suzuki Baleno facelift with 3-cylinder or Glanza G variant with 4 cylinders?

If you want to buy now, go for the current Glanza G. We are yet to drive the new Baleno with its three-cylinder engine, but going by our experience with the Swift, it is unlikely to be as smooth as the existing four-cylinder unit, and performance is likely to take a small hit as well.The new Baleno does get more features, which is something to keep in mind, but if engine refinement and performance are important, the current Glanza's four-cylinder engine has the advantage.There is also an important timing factor with the Glanza. The current Glanza has not received the update yet, but the facelift is due to launch on October 14 and will also move to the new 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine. So, if you specifically want the smoother four-cylinder engine, this is effectively your last opportunity to buy the current Glanza.

I am a new driver and am 6 feet tall. I want to set my hand, preferring strongly for a manual. Suggest some car options in both new and used market.

Go for a used Maruti Suzuki Swift or a Hyundai Grand i10 Nios in manual. Since you won't be keeping the car for long but only till you are a confident driver, buying a used car makes sense. Both these cars are easy to drive, forgiving and reliable, which is exactly what you want when you are learning. The Swift has a slightly more engaging driving experience, while the Grand i10 Nios feels a bit more refined and easier to drive in traffic. Both cars are also comfortable for taller drivers, with decent headroom and a good driving position. Once you are comfortable with driving, you can always upgrade to a larger car.

My swift's been solid through this monsoon so far, no water logging issues even on the flooded stretch near my office. just wish the wipers were a bit quicker on the highest setting

I am 52 years old and have been driving since my 20s. I need to drive around 2,500km a month, with 55% of the driving on highways, 30% on rugged rural roads and 155 in the city.
