I am planning to buy my first family car strictly under 6.5 lakh - 7 lakh (on-road) in Karnataka. My usage will be mainly local commute of 15-18 km daily and highway trips of approximately 300 km to hometown. I'm looking for a practical, reliable and low-maintenance vehicle, and therefore, I am leaning towards petrol with manual transmission. Features that I'm looking for include decent AC, all-4 power windows and central locking along with sufficient rear seat space for 2 adults and a boot big enough to accomodate 2-3 trolley bags. I have shortlisted Maruti Wagon R VXi 1.0 and Maruti Swift LXi. We have excluded Baleno as it wouldn't fit our parking space. I'm also excluding Renault and Citroen as these brands do not have a presence near where I live. I do not wish to consider Tata due to on-going bad experience with service that my friends are facing. Please share your opinion about these two models or any other reliable car that I might be missing out on.

Go for the Maruti Suzuki Swift LXi. Your usage pattern is a mix of daily city commuting and occasional 300km highway runs, and the Swift is the better all-rounder for this. It offers a more comfortable ride, better highway stability and a more refined driving experience compared to the Wagon R. The rear seat has enough space for two adults, and the boot is big enough to suit your requirement of carrying 2-3 trolley bags. The Wagon R is a very practical city car with a tall-boy design and good headroom, but it is not as comfortable or as confidence-inspiring on the highway. Both cars are equally reliable and low-maintenance, but the Swift feels like a more complete car overall.

I’m looking for a car for my wife’s daily commute. A high seating position for better road visibility, ease of driving in everyday traffic, particularly in congested conditions, and good fuel efficiency are our top priorities. Her daily commute is less than 30km, with occasional highway trips of up to 90km one way, at most twice a month. It would also be helpful if the rear seat could comfortably accommodate three adults during these highway trips. What are the available options within budgets of Rs 8 lakh and Rs 12 lakh (on-road) in Kerala? Should we also consider an automatic transmission? The new car will replace our 2009 Maruti Suzuki WagonR, which my wife loves for its excellent road visibility and easy manoeuvrability. I’m looking for something that retains these qualities while offering a suitable upgrade.

The best replacement for a 2009 Maruti Wagon R will be a 2024 Maruti Suzuki Wagon R, for its tall stance, great visibility, ease of driving and affordabilty. For less than Rs 8 lakhs on-road, you should get the top-spec petrol-AMT version. The only downside being, its rear seat isn't wide enough to accommodate three adults.An automatic car with great visibility under Rs 12 lakh on-road with a backseat wide enough for three adults is the Mahindra XUV 3XO RevX M (O) turbo-petrol-automatic. Performance is strong for highway use, its gearbox is smooth for daily use, and overall, it'll feel like a huge step up over your outgoing car.

Team Autocar India, I have recently moved to Goa and am still learning the lay of the land. I am thinking of buying a car and I am a first-time driver as well. I got my license at 18, but I have never owned a car, so I lack driving practice. My budget is within Rs 3 lakh to buy a used car. What should I look out for when buying a pre-owned car, especially given Goa's humid and monsoonal weather? Also, which would be the right choice, a petrol or an electric used car? You should look at the Maruti Suzuki WagonR in the used car market. The WagonR is ideal because its small footprint and narrow width make it manageable around Goa's roads. The elevated seating should also put you at ease because This Maruti Suzuki car gives you a good view of the world around you.The WagonR is a proven product without any reliability issues to speak of. Even in Goa's hot and humid conditions the WagonR does not give any problems. We'd recommend you search for the WagonR with the larger 1.2-litre petrol engine. While these are rarer, the WagonR 1.2 offers significantly more pep, which will be a boon on the narrow and hilly roads of Goa.An electric car within your price band would be extremely hard to come by and would be best avoided.

I am planning to buy the top-end Hyundai Creta Turbo Petrol DCT variant. My daily running is around 50–100km, which adds up to approximately 25,000–30,000km annually. I am looking for a car that offers strong performance and quick acceleration, along with a comprehensive set of comfort and convenience features. Should I buy the current Creta Turbo Petrol DCT top variant or wait for the 2027 Creta? For context, I currently own a 2024 Maruti Suzuki Dzire Hybrid and a Volkswagen Virtus GT 1.5 TSI.

The 2027 Hyundai New Creta will be thoroughly updated inside-out, and it'll have more tech and features. If you don't mind waiting, it makes sense to get the 2027 new-gen model. Do note, its powertrain options are likely to be carried forward from the current version. If you can't wait, but still want the performance as well as the latest in terms of tech and features, consider the Kia Seltos turbo-dct instead, which packs in more or less everything the next-gen Creta is likely to offer.

I’m planning to buy a new car, and my annual running is around 40,000km, primarily involving highway drives and ghat sections. I have shortlisted the Kia Seltos Diesel HTX and the upcoming facelifted Toyota Innova Hycross ZX. I’m considering two approaches: either buy the Innova Hycross and keep it for the next 10 years, given its reputation for longevity and the expectation that its engine can last at least 4 lakh kilometres, or buy the Seltos, drive it for around 2 lakh kilometres over 4–5 years, sell it and upgrade to a brand-new Seltos or another car of a similar price and size. On paper, the Innova Hycross Hybrid seems like the better choice, considering its long-term reliability and features such as the Ottoman reclining seats. However, I’m concerned that I might get bored of it after four years or that it may start feeling outdated as newer technologies and features enter the market. This makes the second option appealing, as it would allow me to upgrade to a brand-new car every 4–5 years. Which approach would make more sense in the long run, considering my high annual running and ownership costs?

It seems like you're leaning towards the Kia Seltos Diesel HTX, and we think it is a good choice. The diesel engine feels adequately powered for highway usage and ghat driving, and it is likely to return respectable efficiency too. Moreover, despite being modern with all the latest tech and features, the Seltos will be substantially more affordable than the Toyota Innova Hycross hybrid. So unless you need the Innova's extra space, or you frequently travel with six or seven passengers, the Kia Seltos diesel is your best bet.
