Which car is better for city and highway driving: the Tata Sierra or the Mahindra Thar Roxx?

The Tata Sierra and Mahindra Thar Roxx are fundamentally different cars aimed at very different buyers. The Sierra is a family-friendly SUV with a focus on comfort, space and refinement, while the Thar Roxx is a lifestyle off-roader with a rugged, go-anywhere character.

If your usage is city and highway, go for the Tata car. If your usage is off-road trails and weekend escapes, go for the Mahindra car.

Go for the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara. It is the more sensible family car and will give you a better long-term ownership experience. The Grand Vitara is a proven product with a comfortable ride, good real world fuel efficiency and Maruti’s strong service network, which makes it a very easy car to live with. It is also a well-rounded family SUV with enough space for five, a decent boot and a good balance between city and highway use.The Tata Sierra is a more interesting product with a more premium cabin and a more distinctive design, but it is a newer car with a shorter ownership track record and Tata’s service experience is still not as consistent as Maruti’s. For a family car under Rs.15 lakh, the Grand Vitara is the safer and more sensible choice.

I am interested in buying the 7XO, specifically the Petrol MT. But after seeing all kinds of reviews on the internet, I am really confused about which one to buy: petrol or diesel, AT or MT. My daily usage is mostly commuting to the office (20 km up and down). We will also be going on long trips (1,000-1,500+ km) twice or thrice a year. I also use the car for grocery shopping in the evening, so my monthly usage is around 300 km. The traffic here is full of bumper-to-bumper congestion. Please suggest which one I should buy: petrol or diesel, AT or MT, considering that I would like to keep this car for 8-10 years.

Go for the Mahindra XUV 7XO petrol automatic. Your usage is predominantly city commuting with heavy bumper-to-bumper traffic, and your monthly running is only around 300 km. In this scenario, a diesel simply does not make sense. Modern diesels make sense for long highway runs, and with your low running, the higher upfront cost and potential long-term maintenance costs aren't justified. The petrol engine is smooth, refined and well-suited to city driving, and the automatic gearbox will make your daily commute far less tiring. This Mahindra car is also a strong highway performer, so those occasional long trips will be handled with ease. The only downside is slightly higher fuel consumption compared to a diesel, but at your usage, that is not a major concern. The manual is worth considering only if you are very price-sensitive, but given your usage pattern, the automatic is the smarter choice for long-term comfort and convenience.

I currently own a 2020 Hyundai Creta SX Facelift, and I'm planning to upgrade by selling it. I'm looking for a bigger vehicle that will primarily be our family car for four members. It should be comfortable for long highway drives, capable of handling occasional off-roading, and, most importantly, offer an exciting and engaging driving experience. I have shortlisted three options: Mahindra Thar Roxx, Mahindra Scorpio Classic, and Mahindra Scorpio N. Which one would you recommend considering my requirements? Besides being a fantastic lifestyle vehicle, it will feel like a genuine upgrade from the Hyundai car in terms of space, road presence and versatility. It is comfortable for four on long highway drives, has a strong diesel engine and a well-sorted chassis that makes it enjoyable to drive.The Mahindra Scorpio N is a great alternative, albeit its ride is a bit bumpier than the Thar Roxx . Opt for it only if you need that extra row of seats for occasional use. Mahindra Scorpio N mileage in our real-world tests was 8.65kpl for the petrol automatic, 10.15kpl for the diesel automatic, and 7.3kpl for the petrol manual.

For your usage, the Skoda Kylaq is a good upgrade. Your 65 km daily expressway run means you need a car that is stable at speed and comfortable over long distances. The Kylaq delivers that very well. At your budget, you could get a lower-spec automatic, which would make it easy to drive in city traffic, which matters for your twice-a-month urban runs. The automatic gearbox is a torque converter, so its shifts are very smooth and it is very reliable too. The only possible downside is that fuel efficiency is not going to be very high, and given your high daily running, this is something that might bother you. If so, opt for the Maruti Suzuki Fronx 1.2L, which is also good at higher speeds and would be more fuel efficient. The auto box in this case is an AMT, which would not be as smooth, but this would only be a bit of a bother in city traffic and not on steady highway cruising.

I have been using Honda City manual for the last 21 years. Now, I want a car with automatic transmission for city running mostly. My average running is around 1000km a month. Can you suggest whether I should buy Seltos, Creta, Kushaq or Elevate?

Given your usage of around 1,000 km a month, mostly in the city, the priority should be a smooth and reliable automatic transmission, good ride comfort and ease of ownership. The Kia Seltos IVT is the most natural recommendation here. The IVT gearbox is also very smooth, and the Seltos feels more premium and feature-rich than the competition. Alternatively, consider the Honda Elevate. The CVT is exceptionally smooth in stop-start traffic, Honda’s ownership experience is proven, and the car is simple, reliable and easy to live with.The Skoda Kushaq is the driver’s choice, with a more engaging driving experience, but in city running, that doesn't matter much. The Hyundai Creta is a good all-rounder, but it is due for a full model change in 2027, which makes the Seltos and Elevate stronger recommendations at this point.
