I currently own a 2020 Hyundai Creta SX Facelift, and I'm planning to upgrade by selling it. I'm looking for a bigger vehicle that will primarily be our family car for four members. It should be comfortable for long highway drives, capable of handling occasional off-roading, and, most importantly, offer an exciting and engaging driving experience. I have shortlisted three options: Mahindra Thar Roxx, Mahindra Scorpio Classic, and Mahindra Scorpio N. Which one would you recommend considering my requirements? I’m looking for the best balance of family comfort, long-distance touring ability, off-road capability, and driving thrill. I would also appreciate your opinion on which of these offers the best overall value for money.

Based on your requirements, the Mahindra Thar Roxx is the clear recommendation. It strikes the best balance between family comfort, long-distance touring ability, off-road capability and an engaging driving experience. Besides being a fantastic lifestyle vehicle, it will feel like a genuine upgrade from the Hyundai car in terms of space, road presence and versatility. It is comfortable for four on long highway drives, has a strong diesel engine and a well-sorted chassis that makes it enjoyable to drive.

The Mahindra Scorpio N is a great alternative, albeit its ride is a bit bumpier than the Thar Roxx . Opt for it only if you need that extra row of seats for occasional use. Mahindra Scorpio N mileage in our real-world tests was 8.65kpl for the petrol automatic, 10.15kpl for the diesel automatic, and 7.3kpl for the petrol manual.

I am planning to buy a 7-seater SUV and am considering the Mahindra Scorpio-N Z8L. However, I’m confused about which variant and powertrain would be best for me among petrol or diesel, and manual or automatic. My monthly running is around 400-500 km. Go for the Mahindra Scorpio N Z8L diesel automatic. Your usage is predominantly on the highway, and the diesel engine is the better fit for this. The Scorpio N diesel is a strong performer on the highway, with good torque and effortless cruising ability, and the automatic gearbox makes long drives far more comfortable and stress-free. Your monthly running is low, but because most of it is highway driving, the diesel engine will regularly meet the conditions needed to keep the DPF system healthy, so DPF-related issues are unlikely to be a concern.The petrol engine is smooth and refined, but it is a large, heavy SUV and fuel efficiency will be noticeably lower than the diesel. In terms of maintenance costs, the diesel will be slightly higher over the long term, but the difference is not significant enough to outweigh the benefits of better fuel efficiency and stronger highway performance. Between manual and automatic, the automatic is the clear choice for a car like the Scorpio N. I have booked the Kia Seltos GTX IVT petrol with the 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine, but I am now beginning to feel that it may not be worth the amount I am spending. I am therefore also considering the Thar Roxx Star Edition petrol. My daily running is around 30-40 km, with an 800-900 km highway trip roughly once every four months. Which one should I choose?

Go for the Kia Seltos GTX IVT. With your daily running of 30-40 km and occasional highway trips, the Seltos is the far more sensible choice. The 1.5 NA petrol paired with the IVT is smooth, refined and well-suited to city driving, while the Seltos itself is a comfortable, feature-rich and practical family SUV. It will be easier to live with on a daily basis, offer better ride comfort and be far more efficient than the Thar Roxx petrol.The Thar Roxx Star Edition is a fun, lifestyle-oriented SUV. Its strengths are stronger engine performance and impressive road presence. Go for it only if these two factors matter to you over fuel efficiency, comfort and ease-of-use for daily commuting, else the Seltos is the better pick.If you feel that the GTX IVT is not worth the amount, consider stepping down to a lower variant rather than switching to a completely different type of vehicle. The Kia car mentioned above remains the better ownership proposition for your needs.

Hello Experts, I have come across the following option: a 2023 Skoda Slavia Ambition 1.5 TSI Manual (second owner) with only 10,500 km on the odometer. The car is mechanically bone stock and has been maintained exclusively at authorised Skoda service centres, with complete service records. It was last serviced in May 2024. It is covered by zero-depreciation insurance, an active AMC service package valid until 2027, and an extended warranty valid until 2029. The car also has a few tasteful aesthetic upgrades, including 17-inch Skoda Kushaq rims with Continental 205/50 R17 tyres, OEM top-spec Style projector headlights, a trunk lip spoiler, and black-wrapped front grille and trunk accents. The owner is selling it due to lack of usage. I have test-driven the car twice, and it seems to be in great condition. The owner has already shared all the previous documents and service records with me and is open to having the car inspected at Skoda or anywhere else. The first owner's details have also been shared openly. Everything looks clean so far. The asking price is Rs. 12 lakh. As a driving enthusiast, I am massively tempted to buy it, but I would like an expert opinion. I also have another option: a Honda Elevate VX Manual, driven for 16,000 km, with a single owner, priced at Rs. 11.25 lakh. Please help me decide. The Slavia is the only 1.5-litre manual I have come across at this price. Many thanks in advance.

Go for the Skoda Slavia 1.5 TSI manual. As a driving enthusiast, this is exactly the kind of car you should be looking for. The 1.5 TSI is a genuinely strong engine with excellent performance, and the manual gearbox makes it a far more engaging car to drive than the Elevate. The fact that it is a rare find in the used market only adds to its appeal.The car itself sounds very clean. Full service history at authorised Skoda workshops, an active AMC, extended warranty till 2029 and zero depreciation insurance all point to a well-maintained example. The only thing to check is the price. Rs 12 lakh is on the higher side for a second-owner 2023 Ambition (entry-level), despite the upgrades and warranty. Remember, the 1.5 TSI MT was discontinued because of low demand, and finding a buyer in the used car market isn't going to be easy unless, of course, a driving enthusiast like you shows interest. Realistically, if you can get the price down below Rs 11 lakh, it could be worth opting for. Else, the Elevate seems like the more sensible option.

I am planning to buy a new car under 20-25 lakh for the next ten years. I have considered two cars Seltos DCT GTX(A) and Kushaq 1.5 Monte Carlo DSG but am afraid of the mileage and if I go with an EV, I am afraid that infrastructure will not be that good. I drive daily for 10-15 km and take 2-3 trips in a year on highway. Should I buy the car now or wait for Seltos Hybrid? Will it cost an additional 2-3 lakh or will it be value for money for my driving. Should I consider another car?

With a daily running of just 10-15 km and only a few highway trips a year, fuel efficiency and long-term reliability should be your top priorities. The Seltos DCT GTX+ and Kushaq 1.5 DSG Monte Carlo are both excellent cars, but their turbo-petrol engines and dual-clutch gearboxes are not the most efficient or the most stress-free choices for predominantly short city runs. The DCT/DSG gearboxes are at their best on open roads, and in stop-start city traffic they can feel a bit jerky and are not as smooth or as durable as a torque converter automatic over the long term.The Seltos hybrid is worth waiting for if you are not in a hurry. It is expected to be priced roughly Rs. 2-3 lakh above the equivalent petrol variant, and for your usage pattern it will make more sense than the turbo-petrol DCT. Hybrids deliver their biggest efficiency gains in city driving, and over a 10-year ownership period the fuel savings and smoother driving experience will more than justify the premium.If you want to buy now, the Kia Seltos IVT (naturally aspirated petrol with CVT) is the better choice for your usage. It is smooth, reliable and well suited to city driving, and you will not be paying a premium for performance you will rarely use. The Skoda Kushaq 1.0 TSI with the torque converter automatic is another good option if you prefer a more engaging driving experience, but the Seltos IVT is the more refined and hassle-free choice.EVs are not the right fit for you at the moment given your concerns about charging infrastructure and your low daily running. The savings are not significant enough to justify the compromises.

I’m planning to buy my first car and would appreciate some suggestions. My budget is around Rs. 13-15 lakh ex-showroom, and I’m planning to register the car under the BH series. Safety is my top priority, so I strongly prefer a car with a 5-star safety rating, preferably from Global NCAP. An automatic transmission is a must. The car will mainly be used for weekend family trips and highway drives rather than daily commuting. Since it will be a family car, I’d prefer something that looks classy and elegant while offering good comfort. A premium-looking interior would be a plus, and features such as leather/leatherette upholstery and ventilated seats would be nice to have, but they aren't deal-breakers. At the same time, I don’t want a car that is purely comfort-oriented. I enjoy driving, so I’d like something with a good engine, enjoyable handling, and a fun-to-drive character. Good rear-seat comfort and reasonable luggage space for family trips would also be appreciated.

Based on your requirements, the Skoda Kushaq 1.0 TSI automatic is the recommendation. It strikes the right balance between safety, driving enjoyment and family usability. The 1.0 TSI engine is strong, the handling is engaging, and the car feels solid and confidence-inspiring on the highway. The interior feels premium, and while it may not be the largest in its segment, overall comfort is quite good. If you prefer the look of the VW Taigun, it offers largely the same experience as the Kushaq. The Renault Duster 1.3 DCT is also a strong alternative, offering excellent driving dynamics and a larger cabin. Overall, though, the Kushaq 1.0 TSI automatic is the car that best aligns with your requirements.

Hi Experts! I am a first-time car buyer and a new driver. I want to buy a sub-4-meter SUV. My daily usage will be between 25- 30 km. It is mostly for city driving in Delhi NCR. I intend to buy an automatic and like the Kylaq as an option. But my understanding is that it is expensive to maintain. Among other options that I am considering are the Venue and the 3XO. However, Venue has DCT, which I understand is not great for city driving. Could you give me some more guidance on maintenance of the Kylaq and, generally, if I have to choose among these 3, what should be the best option? To clarify, my budget is 12-15 lakhs. I have already looked at the Brezza as an option but did not like the feel of it. Sonet has been disregarded because there is a new Sonet coming next year. Thank you for your input!

Go for the Skoda Kylaq 1.0 TSI automatic. This Skoda car is the best fit for your usage and budget. The Kylaq uses a 6-speed torque converter automatic, which is smooth, reliable and well suited to stop-start traffic. It is not a DCT, so you do not have to worry about overheating or jerkiness in city conditions. The 1.0 TSI engine is proven and has a good ownership track record. Skoda's maintenance costs are not significantly higher than Hyundai or Mahindra, especially with service packages available. The Kylaq is also one of the best driver's cars in the segment, with a solid, planted feel and good ride quality.The Hyundai Venue DCT is a good choice but not ideal for your usage, as DCT gearboxes are not ideal for heavy city traffic. The Mahindra XUV 3XO is a strong alternative. It is spacious, feature-rich and has a good torque converter automatic gearbox, but it does not feel as engaging to drive as the Kylaq. Since you have already ruled out the Brezza and Sonet, the Kylaq is the clear recommendation. It will give you the best ownership experience and driving enjoyment over the next 5-10 years.
