I want to buy a family use car under 15 lakh. I am confused between Tata Sierra and Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara.

Go for the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara. It is the more sensible family car and will give you a better long-term ownership experience. The Grand Vitara is a proven product with a comfortable ride, good real world fuel efficiency and Maruti’s strong service network, which makes it a very easy car to live with. It is also a well-rounded family SUV with enough space for five, a decent boot and a good balance between city and highway use.

The Tata Sierra is a more interesting product with a more premium cabin and a more distinctive design, but it is a newer car with a shorter ownership track record and Tata’s service experience is still not as consistent as Maruti’s. For a family car under Rs.15 lakh, the Grand Vitara is the safer and more sensible choice.

Since Toyota Hyryder Strong Hybrid does not come with a spare tire, I want to get it myself. But the problem is that although the Toyota dealerships in the entire region have the requisite stand available, the bolts required to fasten the stand with the chassis underbody are nowhere available as the manufacturer is not supplying the same for about last two months. How do I resolve it?

The lack of bolts appears to be a parts availability issue rather than a reason to abandon the spare wheel conversion. However, the mounting hardware for a spare wheel carrier is a safety critical component, so generic bolts should not be used simply because they fit the threads. The correct bolt size, thread pitch, length, strength grade and washer arrangement need to match Toyota's specified hardware.The best approach is to ask the dealer to raise a formal parts request with Toyota and escalate it through Toyota customer care. The dealer should also check whether the same spare wheel carrier and mounting hardware is used on the non hybrid Hyryder or the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, and whether the required hardware can be sourced through that parts network. This should be confirmed by Toyota before anything is fitted.A reputable fastener specialist can be used if Toyota provides the exact part specification, but there is little benefit in guessing the specification yourself. Avoid drilling or modifying the underbody to accommodate alternative hardware.

I read a news report that Mahindra is planning range-extender and strong-hybrid powertrains. Is there a possibility of Mahindra launching a diesel PHEV in models like the Scorpio N and Scorpio Lifestyler pickup?

Mahindra has confirmed that it is working on range extenders and strong hybrids, but it has not announced any diesel plug-in hybrid plans for the Scorpio N or Scorpio Lifestyler. In fact, Mahindra has not confirmed any diesel plug-in hybrid models at all. The company’s hybrid strategy is expected to focus on petrol-based strong hybrids and range extenders, rather than diesel plug-in hybrids.Diesel plug-in hybrids are also relatively rare globally because they are complex and expensive to develop, and the emissions benefits are not as clear-cut as with petrol hybrids. Mahindra’s diesel engines are already very efficient, and the company is more likely to focus on petrol hybrids and range extenders for future hybrid models.So while Mahindra is definitely working on hybrids, a diesel plug-in hybrid Scorpio N or Scorpio Lifestyler is unlikely at this stage.

I am confused between Creta SX IVT and Elevate CVT for 8000 km of annual running with long trips of 1200 km 3-4 times in a year for a family of 4. Apart from this, day to day usage is less than 100km per month. I am looking for a car for long term ownership and travel comfort.

The Creta SX IVT is the better fit for your requirement. It offers a quieter, more refined cabin, comfortable rear seats and a smoother CVT, which are particularly valuable when spending several hours on the highway with four people and luggage. Autocar's long term experience with the Creta petrol IVT also found it refined, comfortable and particularly well suited to road trips.The Honda Elevate CVT has advantages of its own. Its 220mm ground clearance, long travel suspension and large 458-litre boot make it particularly good on poor roads, while its naturally aspirated 1.5-litre engine and CVT make for a relatively simple powertrain. However, the cabin is noticeably noisier, particularly when accelerating hard, and the CVT can produce the typical rubber band effect.

Hi Autocar Team, I am confused between the XUV 7XO AX7T diesel manual and automatic. My current ride is a Fluidic Verna diesel manual, which is nearing 15 years of ownership and has clocked nearly 2.5 lakh km. My usage consists of mixed city and highway driving, with around 40km daily and weekend highway runs of about 400km. For long-term ownership, which would be the better choice: the manual or automatic?
