I am selling my Ford Figo diesel and planning to buy a new car. I drive around 400-500km in the city every month and do an occasional 1,200km highway trip once every three months. Should I buy the new Kushaq 1.5 or the Slavia 1.5? Are there any other recommendations?

Both are good choices, but if you don't often carry tall items in the boot, the Skoda Slavia is the better fit for your needs. Your quarterly 1200 km highway runs will feel easier in the sedan - it is more stable at speed, quieter, and its big boot still swallows a lot of luggage. With your 400-500 km a month in the city, the 1.5 TSI’s strong mid-range and light controls keep it easy, and the sedan’s lower shape gives slightly better mileage than the Kushaq on the open road.

The downside is that you sit lower. The Kushaq’s extra height gives you a better view out, and it is easier to get in and out of. Ground clearance is slightly better, too, but the Slavia isn't exactly lacking. If you want the same mechanics with Volkswagen flavour, look at the Virtus 1.5 or the Taigun1.5.

It's worth noting that the Slavia and Virtus are due for a facelift, which will arrive sometime this year. It will bring a revised front and rear design and a few new features, similar to what the Kushaq/Taigun got recently. If that doesn't matter to you, there may be better deals to be had on the current Slavia.

@vrk.1 I would honestly recommend the Slavia 1.5. Most of your driving is on good roads, and those long 1,200 km highway trips are where the Slavia really shines with its stability, ride comfort, and effortless cruising. The Kushaq makes more sense if you frequently drive on bad roads or want the higher seating position. If you're open to alternatives, the Virtus 1.5 can be considered too.

Comparing VW Virtus Highline Plus 1.0 TSI Automatic with the Tata Safari Pure X turbo petrol manual. I understand segments are different. I am not confused about which car to buy. Your daily running is low, and the occasional highway trips do not justify the additional size and complexity of the Tata Safari. The Virtus offers a more refined driving experience, better fuel efficiency and a more manageable ownership proposition over the long term. It is also a more comfortable car for a family of four plus a child, with a spacious rear seat and a large boot. The Safari Pure X turbo petrol manual is a good value proposition for those who need the extra space and road presence, but it is not the best choice for your usage pattern. The manual gearbox will become tiresome in traffic, and the larger size will make it less convenient to live with on a daily basis. The Virtus is the more sensible and enjoyable choice for your needs. You can expect the Volkswagen Virtus mileage to be around 9 to 12 kpl in the city and 15 to 18 kpl on the highway.

Both the Kushaq and Taigun are mechanically identical, sharing the same 1.5 TSI engine + dual-clutch automatic gearbox options and chassis, so the driving experience is essentially the same. The decision comes down to brand preference, dealership experience and minor differences in interior design and feature packaging. The Volkswagen Taigun's design and interior feel slightly more premium, but the difference is marginal. At the end, besides aesthetics, see which brand is getting you a better deal. You won't go wrong with either. The Taigun price starts at Rs 11 lakh for the base variant (ex-showroom).

I am considering the Toyota Hyryder Hybrid top model. I have never owned an automatic car. I drove it and found it a bit underpowered. Will it be safe to take it to the mountains? Will it climb steep roads without any issues? Is overtaking at high speeds difficult? Is it worth buying? If not, please suggest another option.

The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder Hybrid is a very sensible choice for your first automatic. It is smooth, efficient and easy to drive in the city, and the hybrid system works well in stop-start traffic. However, your concern about feeling underpowered is valid. The hybrid system is tuned for efficiency rather than outright performance, and under hard acceleration, you will feel that the engine is straining a bit. Overall, performance feels adequate, and while it will climb hills and handle mountain roads without issue, performance doesn't feel particularly strong or effortless like some turbo-petrol or diesel cars.This Toyota car is a great choice if your priority is efficiency and ease of use, but if you want more performance and better overtaking ability, a 1.5 turbo-petrol automatic powered SUV like a Kia Seltos or Skoda Kushaq/VW Taigun would be a better fit.

The Volkswagen Taigun mileage is 19.54 kpl for the 1.0 TSI AT, 19.98 kpl for the 1.0 TSI MT, and 18.85 kpl for the 1.5 TSI DCT.The Kia Seltos diesel X-Line is a strong all-rounder with better space, a more premium cabin and a more relaxed long-distance character, but it does not offer the same level of driver engagement. With 5,000-7,000 km a year and mostly city driving, you are the ideal EV buyer. The Mahindra XEV 9S in its top-spec Pack Three guise will comfortably fit in your budget. With a 79kWh battery pack, you can easily expect a real-world range of around 480km in daily driving conditions. The 9S is also a full-size SUV with three rows, so practicality is excellent.
