Hi AutocarIndia, I have a budget of ₹23-25 lakh. My monthly running is approximately 12,000-14,000 km, with around 70% city driving and 30% highway usage. I am confused between choosing a petrol vehicle and an EV. I am not considering a diesel option since my driving is not very regular at times, and I am concerned about potential DPF clogging issues. Currently, I am evaluating the Mahindra XUV 7XO A7 T petrol, which costs around ₹25 lakh on-road in Pune. However, considering the current global war situation, I feel petrol prices may increase permanently, which is making me seriously consider an EV. I am therefore looking at the Tata Harrier EV Fearless Plus 75 kWh, which is priced around ₹27 lakh. Though I have heard that some discounts are available, and the effective price could come down to around ₹26 lakhs. Given my usage pattern, budget, and long-term cost concerns, please guide me on whether a petrol or EV would be the better choice and help me decide between these options. Thanks in advance.

The Mahindra XUV 7XO petrol does not suit this kind of running. A turbo petrol will be significantly more expensive to run over time, and with your usage, the fuel cost difference will be substantial.
The Tata Harrier EV makes far more sense here. It offers very low running costs per km, smooth and effortless driving in the city, and strong performance on highways. With your high usage, the savings on fuel will add up quickly and justify the higher initial cost.
The key condition is charging. If you have reliable home or office charging, the EV becomes a very practical and economical solution. Without that, managing frequent charging will become inconvenient.
On your concern about diesel, in your case, it is actually not an issue. With such high and consistent running, DPF problems will not arise, as the car will regularly get the kind of driving needed to keep the system healthy.

How much temperature rise would be there considering below scenarios :- ⬇️ After driving for 20KM (~20 Minutes) in ZAP mode at an ambient temperature of ~35°C :- What's the ideal temperature change in the nearby area of engine compartment/under the hood of XUV 7XO Diesel AX7T variant ? Just want to know as per the manufacturing/engineering norms what is the rate of temperature rise? How much temperature rises usually after driving for ~20KM (~20 minutes) ? Whether there'll be a rise of :- 1°C .... 10°C or 20°C or 30°C or 40°C ?

Hi, I have booked the Mahindra XUV 7XO AX7T Diesel. This will be my second car and will be used primarily for highway travel, serving as an alternative vehicle with occasional family trips. My annual running will be around 5,000 km, and I plan to sell the car after about two years. Given this usage pattern, would it be better to opt for the diesel variant despite potential DPF-related concerns, or should I consider the petrol variant instead? In your case, we would actually stick with the diesel. The reason is that this is not going to be your primary city car. You have clearly stated that it will be used mainly for highway travel, occasional family trips and as a second vehicle. Those are exactly the conditions under which a modern diesel is happiest. With regular highway runs, the DPF gets the opportunity to regenerate properly, so we would not be overly concerned about DPF issues.The bigger factor is your planned two-year ownership period. In the used market, the diesel XUV 7XO is likely to be more desirable and easier to sell than the petrol, especially because buyers looking at a large SUV often prefer the stronger torque delivery and superior fuel efficiency of the diesel. That should help residual values as well.If you were doing 5,000 km a year entirely in city traffic, we would steer you towards the petrol. But your usage pattern is different. The car will spend most of its time doing exactly the kind of driving that suits the diesel powertrain.

I want to upgrade from my current car to an SUV, but I am confused between the Mahindra Scorpio N, Tata Harrier, and Mahindra XUV 7XO. During the rainy season, I occasionally have to drive on a slippery uphill stretch that my current Hyundai i10 is unable to handle. My budget is around Rs. 23 lakh. For your requirement, the Mahindra Scorpio N would be our first recommendation. The key reason is that you have specifically mentioned a slippery hill climb during the rainy season. The Scorpio N's rear wheel drive architecture, higher ground clearance and more rugged SUV underpinnings give it an advantage in low grip situations compared to the Harrier and XUV 7XO. If your budget allows, even a 4WD variant would be worth considering.The XUV 7XO would be our second choice. As an overall product, it is the most modern of the three, with a better interior, more technology and a more premium feel. It is also more comfortable and easier to drive every day than the Scorpio N. However, if that slippery hill climb is a recurring part of your ownership experience, the Scorpio N's more rugged nature gives it the edge.The Tata Harrier is a good highway SUV with a comfortable ride, but for your specific requirement it would be our third choice. It is front wheel drive only and, apart from offering a more comfortable third row, the XUV 7XO is the stronger product in most other areas, including performance, technology, interior quality and overall ownership experience.

I want to buy a car under Rs 12 lakh. It should be a petrol automatic and will be my first car. I need good ground clearance, a good engine and gearbox combination for 70% city and 30% highway use, and my daily running is around 30 km in Bengaluru traffic. Given your exclusions, the Skoda Kylaq automatic would be our first recommendation. Specifically, the Signature automatic is if you can stretch slightly. The 1.0 TSI turbo petrol and torque converter automatic are a very good combination for Bangalore traffic. The gearbox is smooth, the engine has enough punch for highway overtakes, and the car feels more premium and substantial than most options in this price range. Ground clearance is good, it is easy to drive, and it has the solid feel that many first-time buyers appreciate.Another strong option is the Mahindra XUV 3XO MX2 Pro automatic. It has a wider rear seat, feels bigger inside and is one of the most spacious compact SUVs in the segment. The torque converter automatic is smooth, and it is comfortable for city use. The downside is that fuel efficiency is not that great, and the boot is on the smaller side.If you are willing to consider a sedan, the Honda Amaze CVT is also worth a look. The CVT is exceptionally smooth in traffic, reliability is excellent, and it is the kind of car you can comfortably keep for a decade. The only reason it is not our primary recommendation is that you specifically mentioned wanting good ground clearance.
