I am confused between the Nexon, XUV 3XO, and Venue as my first car. My running is expected to be 1,000-1,200 km per month. My priorities are: 1) Performance, 2) Mileage and ownership cost, 3) Features, and 4) Rear-seat and boot space. Please advise and suggest the best-value variant as well. I am inclined towards an automatic gearbox. Should I look for the sedan as well? Is the Diesel option feasible for me if I want to keep my car for the next 5 years?

Of your three shortlisted SUVs, the Hyundai Venue 1.0 T-GDi makes the most sense as it's the best all-rounder in the segment. It's got a good blend of performance and efficiency, maintenance is relatively cheap and hassle-free, and there are loads of features on offer, even in mid-level variants. It offers a good mix of rear-seat space and boot volume, which are both big improvements on the last-gen Venue. If there's a downside, it's that its DCT automatic can be jerky in low-speed traffic, and needs to be driven with this in mind. The manual, meanwhile, has a light and smooth clutch and gearshift action, so consider it as well. The Hyundai Venue price starts at Rs 8.00 lakh and goes up to Rs 15.65 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
The Mahindra XUV 3XO scores high on performance, with the strongest engine in the class, and it has great space inside the cabin. Its downside, however, is that boot space is not so great, and neither is fuel economy. The Tata Nexon is also a decent all-rounder, but in most areas, it can't quite keep up with the newer and more polished Venue. Overall, the Venue is the one we think you should go for.
Diesel is certainly a feasible option if you plan to keep the car for 5 years, and the mileage will certainly be better. But these engines are nowhere near as refined or punchy as their petrol counterparts, and thanks to newer emissions mitigation technology, they're far more expensive to buy, and require extra maintenance to run. Thus, for your usage, and for a first car, we would stick to petrol.

The 3XO is also one of the most spacious and comfortable compact SUVs, with a wide cabin that makes it a genuinely comfortable five-seater for long journeys. This Mahindra car is also one of the safest cars in the segment, with a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating, and Mahindra’s service network and maintenance costs are reasonable. The diesel automatic is a torque converter unit, which is smooth and reliable, and the car is well equipped with useful features without being overly complex. If you are absolutely set on petrol, the Hyundai Venue in its top-spec HX10 guise, with the turbo petrol automatic option, is also worth considering. It is a newer car, has a fresher design and a nicer interior as well, and gets all the bells and whistles that you get on the Mahindra. Efficiency definitely won't be as much as the diesel version, but if a turbo petrol is what you want, the performance is very good on the Venue. Hi, I am from Kolkata and am planning to buy a new car for the first time. My budget is between 11 and 12 lakh. Now, my driving will be more or less within 600-700 km/month which will involve 60% city and 40% highway driving. I want a compact SUV and my choices are Maruti Suzuki Brezza 1.5 ZXi, Brezza ZXi 1.0L Turbo, Skoda Kylaq Classic+/Signature and Tata Nexon Pure Plus PS. You can suggest me other cars as well. I am confused between NA and Turbo. Mileage is also an important factor but not the first priority.

Go for the Maruti Suzuki Brezza ZXi 1.0L turbo petrol. While the Brezza NA will be more efficient, with your running of 600-700 km a month and a 60:40 city-highway split, you likely aren't going to feel the pinch. You will, however, appreciate the turbo's extra performance on the highway. Drivability in traffic is also good, with good low end performance and a light clutch. The reason to get the NA would be is you are opting for the automatic, which isn't available on the turbo. The Brezza also has Maruti’s service reach and low maintenance costs, which is important for a first-time buyer. The Kylaq is the better driver’s car, but the Brezza is the more sensible long-term ownership choice. The Nexon is a good option too, but the Brezza’s ownership experience is easier.

I have a Tata Nexon Creative AMT that is only a year old, but I have already had to replace the spark plugs four times and the ignition coil once. I am still facing engine misfires and vibrations inside the car. I am honestly fed up with Tata's service, as they have been unable to resolve the issue. I am therefore planning to sell the Nexon and buy a Kia Seltos with a manual transmission this time. My priority was safety earlier, and it remains my top priority.
