I drive around 1,0000-2,000 km per month in the city and take 5-6 trips a year of up to 1,500 km one way. I am an Army veteran at pay level 5 and want to purchase the best suitable car. I have shortlisted the Grand Vitara, Hyryder, and Dzire. Please suggest.

The Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Toyota Hyryder are bigger cars and will certainly feel like a bigger step up over your outgoing vehicle, as far as ride comfort or performance goes. Both share their 1.5-litre petrol engine and 5-speed manual gearbox. This powertrain is smooth, refined and quite efficient too. Between the two, pick the one that appeals to you more in terms of design. Another deciding factor between the two is the colour of the interior - Vitara gets a brown interior, while Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder will get a black cabin.

The outgoing Maruti Suzuki Dzire, however, might not feel like a huge upgrade over the third-generation 2017 Dzire, which you currently own. What works in its favour, however, are its excellent fuel-efficiency, as well as the premium features, like sunroof, 360-degree camera and wireless charging, all of which are available in the top variants. Given that the SUV options fall within your budget, go for them instead.

I am planning to buy a car in the ₹20-21 lakh range. My priorities are safety, performance, and decent mileage. My daily driving varies a lot, ranging from around 10 km to 100 km per day. I was considering waiting for MG Motor to launch a plug-in hybrid. How long do you think it might take for MG to launch such a car, and would it be worth waiting for it? Or should I go ahead and buy an ICE vehicle instead? I do not need the car immediately and can wait for around 6-8 months. What do you think would be the best option for me?

If you are keen on a hybrid and can wait for 6 to 8 months, then we would recommend you do so. MG, JSW Motor and Renault will all be launching either strong and/or plug-in hybrids this year. As for the driving pattern, it doesn't make much of a difference if your daily runs vary, as you have indicated, from 10 to 100 km. An important factor when considering a hybrid is simply how many kilometres you would drive in its time with you. If you are going to keep the car for a long time, like 4 years and would on average have a running of about 1800km per month. In the case of something like a Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, a strong hybrid over the regular engine makes sense. As for plug-in hybrids, you'll have to wait to see the pricing difference and figure out if it works for you.

Hi, first of all, thanks to Autocar for always replying to each query. I am looking for an automatic car. It should have a peppy engine and be fun to drive with proper safety. I will be driving my car mostly in the city and occasionally on the highway on weekends. I prefer petrol. I already own a Kia Sonet iMT. Kindly suggest any other car apart from the Kia.

The Mahindra XUV 3XO will meet your requirements of a car with a peppy engine and good safety. The petrol automatic comes paired with a torque convertor gearbox, which is the smoothest autobox around, and since your driving is mostly in the city, you will really appreciate this.We would recommend the 1.2-litre MPFi turbo engine, which would offer you more than enough pep and a slightly better mileage than the direct injection unit, though bear in mind that on the whole, mileage will still be lower than something like the Brezza, as Mahindra tunes all its engines for a peppy feel.If mileage isn't a priority and you simply want a very peppy and lively drive feel, opt for the direct injection unit. We would suggest you go for the Maruti Suzuki Fronx Delta+ AMT. The Fronx has a fuel-efficient 1.2-litre engine mated to an AMT gearbox that is well-tuned and smooth enough for daily driving. It is also fairly spacious, offers a large boot and a comfortable ride, which makes it an ideal companion for everyday city commutes and occasional highway drives.If you want something smaller and easier to manoeuvre, you can consider the Maruti Suzuki Swift AMT. It is a more compact car, which makes it even easier to drive and park in the city. However, the new Swift now comes with a 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine, which feels a bit less powerful compared to the Fronx’s four-cylinder engine. Because of this, the AMT gearbox also works better with the Fronx engine than it does with the Swift.Within your budget, you can also consider the Hyundai i20 IVT/CVT in the Magna variant. The CVT gearbox is very smooth, which elevates the overall driving experience and makes the car extremely easy to drive in traffic. The interiors of the i20 also feel quite premium. The only downside is that you will have to trade a bit of fuel efficiency for that smoothness, which is something to keep in mind since efficiency is an important factor for you.
