I am 35 years old, a swimmer with an athletic build, 6 feet tall, and weigh 70 kg. I live in Ahmedabad, a city with poor road conditions, heavy traffic, and unpredictable road behavior. Hard braking and quick manoeuvring are often necessary due to potholes, slippery roads, and sudden pedestrian or vehicle movements. I tried the Pulsar NS125, but with a heavy pillion rider (90 kg+), I found it difficult to manoeuvre in tight traffic. The bike felt heavy, braking was harder to manage, and I experienced back pain after riding with a heavy pillion. Under the same conditions, I do not face any back pain when riding the Honda Twister with a similar pillion. Please suggest a new or used bike within a budget of ₹1.8 lakh that is suitable for city use, has a sporty look, offers comfortable seating, and is easy to manoeuvre without causing back pain, even with a pillion rider. Should I wait for the Kawasaki Ninja 125 launch? I am also considering a used Kawasaki Ninja 300 for the next two years—will it be comfortable for city riding, and will its seating position help avoid back pain while handling traffic with a heavy pillion rider?

Within your budget, you will get very old examples of the Kawasaki Ninja 300, which will likely not be in good shape after all these years. We'd recommend you go for a new bike for the peace of mind that comes with it and the warranty coverage that comes with it. 

Since you have mentioned you want something sporty, we'd recommend the Bajaj Pulsar NS200 and the TVS Apache RTR 200 4V. Both have energetic engines, good handling and will also be comfortable for day-to-day use with their upright ergonomics. 

Both are also reasonably comfortable bikes to carry pillion with, although larger people will be pressed for space. 

A test ride of these two should help you decide which is best for you.

The River Indie is an impressive electric scooter and will serve you nicely. It is a large, spacious and comfortable machine that focuses on maximising utility rather than frilly features. Its 43 litre underseat storage is the largest on an electric scooter today and can swallow a lot of daily essentials like groceries, a backpack, a large helmet and also have space for the charger. The only thing to be mindful of is its size and weight, because if you are of a shorter stature, then the Indie's size could potentially prove to be too big for you. In that case, we would recommend you opt for one of these three - TVS iQube, Bajaj Chetak and Ather Rizta. Make sure you take a test ride of these before you decide to go ahead with your purchase, so you can make an informed decision.

I want to buy a second-hand bike mainly for weekend touring. My height is 5’11”, and I will mostly be riding on highways, not for off-roading. My typical rides will be around 180-200 km on weekends. I am looking for a bike that is comfortable for long rides and has low maintenance costs. Which bike should I consider?

Since you haven't specified a budget, it's hard to give you an exact recommendation, but we'll give you a wide variety of options to choose from, catering to different price points. Under the Rs 2 lakh mark, something like a Royal Enfield Classic / Bullet 350, any of the Honda CB350 models, TVS Ronin, as well as the Honda CB300F will be available. These bikes can handle long highway rides, provided you're comfortable with maintaining speeds below 100kph.If you can stretch to Rs 3 lakh, then options like the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650, TVS Apache RTR / RR 310 and previous-gen KTM 390 Duke and Adventure models are available. These bikes give you the ability to cruise around 100-120kph owing to their more powerful engines. However, the single-cylinder TVS and KTM models won't be able to match the smoothness of the twin-cylinder Royal Enfield. Do bear in mind that since you want a vehicle with low maintainance, it would be advisable to go for a machine with a documented service history and one that has its cycle parts (brakes, tyres, fluids) in good condition, so you don't need to incur additional expenses.

Both the Yamaha MT-15 and TVS Apache RTR 200 4V are reliable machines offering you similiar levels of performance around the Rs 1.50 lakh mark. In general, Yamaha's products are easier to live with and service in comparison to TVS' offerings. Although it's not an exact science and sometimes boils down to your particular machine and the service centre you take it to. We'd recommend a test ride of both as well as visits to authorised service centres and showrooms of both bikes, so that you can make an informed decision.
