Best scooters at Auto Expo 2018

Scooter sales have gone through the roof and every manufacturer wants to cash in on this spree. So it was obvious that we would witness the launch and unveiling of some interesting scooters at this year’s Auto Expo. Even though the sheer number of new products wasn’t very high, it was an interesting mix of family scooters and some premium scooters which are soon to be launched in India. We bring forth the most interesting scooters from Auto Expo 2018.

    Suzuki Burgman Street

We gave you the first glimpse of the new Burgman Street scooter, last month, which was officially unveiled at the Auto Expo. The Burgman name is normally reserved for Suzuki’s flagship scooter, which is offered in various different displacements, globally. The Burgman 600 was also, at one point, available in India. The Burgman Street, though, has been specifically developed for the Indian market and is based on the popular Suzuki Access 125. What makes the new scooter from Suzuki so interesting is its maxi-scooter styling, which makes it stand apart from its competition. The large front apron comes fitted with LED headlamps and a full-digital console sourced from the Gixxer (both are a first for any Suzuki scooter). Other features include a multi-function key slot, generous under-seat storage, a 12V charging socket, tubeless tyres and an LED tail-lamp. We expect the scooter to carry a premium of Rs 7,000-8,000 more than the top-spec Access SE.

    Honda Activa 5G

Honda surprised everyone by riding in the new version of the most popular scooter in India. The Japanese two-wheeler giant showcased the new Activa 5G at the 2018 Auto Expo. Honda hasn’t revealed pricing for their new scooter yet but we expect it to be priced at a marginal premium over the Honda Activa 4G. For this fifth generation, Honda has added a Deluxe variant. This model comes with a digi-analogue instrument cluster that gets ECO and service-due indicator lights. The Activa 5G has an all-LED headlamp and chrome styling inserts, as well. It also features a new front hook to carry small bags and a tougher metal muffler protector.

    Aprilia SR 125

A little over a month ago we showed you pictures of the Aprilia SR 125 in both its colours (matte silver and gloss blue) and revealed its price of Rs 65,310 (ex-showroom, Pune). The launch at Auto Expo 2018 confirmed this and gave us more details about this 125cc-powered scooter. Its motor makes 9.5hp at 7,250rpm and 9.9Nm of torque at 6,250rpm. Other than this, the SR remains identical to its elder sibling, except for the new digi-analogue instrument cluster seen on the 2018 SR 150. The two-wheeler is targeted at buyers looking for SR-type styling and handling, albeit in a more affordable and economical package.

    Hero Maestro 125

Hero has entered the 125cc scooter segment with two new models – the Maestro Edge 125 and the Duet 125. Both scooters are powered by the same 125cc engine. However, while the Maestro targets younger buyers with its sporty styling; the Duet, on the other hand, is more suited for an older audience. They also use the same 125cc motor that makes 8.7hp and 10.2Nm of torque. The scooters are also equipped with i3S (idle-start-stop tech) that, up until now, was seen only on Hero motorcycles. While the two miss out on LED headlights, they get LED tail-lights, external fuel-filling, digi-analogue instrumentation, service indicators and a side stand.
