Rs 70 lakh is a substantial budget for a 7-seat SUV, but the sad reality is that there aren't too many options for the money. The charming Land Rover Discovery Sport is the closest in terms of price, but third-row space, comfort, and access are poor. You could look at options a few rungs down the price ladder. The Skoda Kodiaq, for one, is a great SUV that scores for its premium feel, but, again, third-row space isn't great. Likewise, Volkswagen Tayron, which will go on sale in the coming months, also promises a premium vibe but is unlikely to offer great room at the very back. If third-row space isn't critical, we'd suggest you look at the Skoda and Volkswagen cars. Another upcoming option is the MG Majestor, expected in 2026. It's a large SUV that promises generous space even for third-row passengers. The Majestor will be well-equipped, packing in lots of creature comforts, and the body-on-frame construction should also lend it a tough appeal. However, we will only be able to comment on the driving experience once we get behind the wheel of the SUV when it arrives in 2026.

While you are advised to personally test the vehicles to judge comfort, a higher-riding SUV usually is more comfortable to get into and out of than a sedan. There are a fair few options within your budget (do remember to haggle hard!), among which we'd suggest you check out the BMW iX1, BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC, Audi Q5, Volvo XC60 and Land Rover Discovery Sport.You could also look at the Kia Carnival if you are open to the MPV body style.

The Lexus LM and Land Rover Range Rover HSE are completely different vehicles. The Lexus car is a fantastic chauffeur-driven car with a pair of rear seats that resemble a first-class cabin. We can see your father being very comfortable in the back seat, which has all amenities, and getting in and out of those sliding doors will be very easy. The Range Rover doesn’t have the same lounge-like cabin, but the back seat is fantastically comfortable too. Where the Range Rover noses ahead of the LM is with its far better ride quality and the sheer class it offers. An MPV, no matter how luxurious, somehow can’t match the status and image of an SUV. And lastly, for your weekend drives and road trips, the Range Rover drives much better than the LM.

Go for the Range Rover Sport petrol in 2027 - it will make your city days enjoyable and your long trips with kids and the dog easier. The air suspension glides over broken roads and can lower the car, so the dog hops in without drama, and the cabin stays very quiet, which matters with children on board. It also feels like a true upgrade from your 5 Series - far more special to sit in and arrive in, not just a taller BMW.The BMW X5 will likely be sharper to drive and lighter on its feet, and BMW’s service reach is wider. If you love the 5 Series’ tight, sporty feel, the X5 will feel familiar. But for family comfort first, the Range Rover Sport’s ride and seat comfort win.One honest catch: JLR ownership can be fussier than BMW - higher running costs and occasionally patchy service. Also expect the petrol to be thirsty in town. At this budget and with these options, there are many directions you could go, all of which have some distinct advantage. The easiest one is the Mercedes-Benz GLS, which offers maximum space for your money, including a third row of seats. It offers the choice of smooth six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, and Mercedes has the widest sales and service network of all these brands, so you're in good hands. Do note that, of these SUVs, this is the most common, and its large size can make it cumbersome to drive around town.The Land Rover Defender could be seen as the best value for money, and the one that offers the most variety, including four- and six- cylinder engines, and various body styles and seating configurations. With a slight stretch in budget, you can even get a supercharged V8 engine, which is incredibly characterful. However, quality in this Land Rover car isn't quite as good as the rest, including its own sibling, the Range Rover Sport.The Sport will push your budget, and even then, it offers a 6-cylinder petrol or diesel in a single HSE trim. However, it is the most rounded offering, mixing sumptuous luxury with good dynamics and characterful engines, not to mention excellent badge value. If you can stretch your budget slightly, this is the one to get.The Porsche Cayenne is the one to choose only if you put driving above all else on your priority list. It is exciting from behind the wheel and is a high-quality, solidly engineered product that also has great badge value. However, its performance focus means it's not as comfortable or easy to drive at low speeds, and many seemingly basic features are optional extras, which means this Porsche car too will push the limits of your budget.Overall, the Range Rover Sport is the best bet for you, or if you want a bit more space, the Mercedes-Benz GLS.
