Hi, I am planning to buy my first car and am a new driver. My budget is up to ₹17.5 lakh. Initially, I was considering the Honda Elevate, but I have now decided to go for a turbo engine option. My usage will be around 60% highway driving. I am currently confused between the Renault Duster, Skoda Kushaq, and Kia Seltos. Which of these would be the best choice for me and why?

A turbo-petrol is a good choice for your usage, as the strong mid-range makes highway overtakes and cruising more relaxed and confidence-inspiring.The new Renault Duster is a very solid highway option: its 1.3 turbo puts out about 160 hp, the most powerful in this group. Its ride comfort is arguably the best in class, which you’ll really appreciate over long distances. If you value a cushy, planted feel and don’t mind a slightly more old-school cabin experience, it’s a strong contender. If your highways are generally smooth, the refreshed Skoda Kushaq 1.5 TSI is also a great choice. It actually feels more tied down at high speeds than the Duster and has more responsive steering, which gives it sharper, more engaging handling. The 1.5 TSI with the quick-shifting 7-speed DSG is a very effective overtaking tool and feels properly sophisticated on the move. The Kia Seltos is the best all-rounder: it offers the most spacious cabin and the most premium interiors, with loads of features. However, while its 1.5 turbo-petrol is powerful on paper, it doesn’t feel as characterful or as enthusiastic as the Duster’s 1.3 or Kushaq’s 1.5 TSI in real-world driving.

I have a budget of around ₹15 lakh (on-road) and am looking for a petrol automatic car. My usage will be approximately 70% city driving and 30% highway, with an annual running of about 10,000 km. My key priorities are reliability, fuel efficiency, and overall value for money. I am currently considering the Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, and Maruti Suzuki Brezza. Which one should I prefer among these three? Additionally, the newly launched Kia Seltos and Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara also seem appealing. Should I consider stretching my budget for these models?

The Maruti Suzuki Brezza VXi AT is the best fit among your options. It uses a smooth torque converter automatic, which is ideal for city traffic and more reliable in the long run. The engine is simple, proven and efficient, and Maruti’s service network and low maintenance costs make ownership very easy. It also offers good ride comfort and a spacious cabin, which adds to its family appeal. The Hyundai Venue and Kia Sonet are more feature-rich and feel more modern inside, but both use turbo petrol engines with DCT gearboxes in the automatic versions. These are quicker and more fun to drive, but in heavy city traffic, they are not as smooth and can feel slightly jerky at low speeds. On stretching your budget, the Kia Seltos is a segment above and a better all-round car, but the petrol automatic will go well beyond your budget. The Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara is also appealing, especially in strong hybrid form, but again requires a significant stretch. For your usage and priorities, there is no strong reason to stretch. The Brezza already fits your needs very well.

I am a retired person and currently own a Jeep Compass Limited Plus diesel manual, which I am planning to replace. My driving is about 5% in Chennai city and the rest on highways. Once every two months, I go on long road trips, mainly on highways and rural roads. Most of the time, it will be just me and my wife, with occasionally two additional passengers. I am considering the diesel Kia Seltos or Mahindra 7XO within a ₹16-18 lakh on-road budget. Kindly suggest which vehicle and model would be most suitable for my needs.

For your usage, which is mostly highway driving with occasional rural roads and long trips, the Mahindra XUV 7XO diesel manual is the better fit. It offers a more relaxed and effortless driving experience, especially over long distances. An important point in your case is what you are upgrading from. Your Jeep Compass diesel uses a 2.0-litre engine, and moving to the Kia Seltos diesel, which has a smaller 1.5-litre engine, will not feel like an upgrade in terms of performance. It will feel adequate, but not significantly stronger than what you are used to.The XUV 7XO, on the other hand, also uses a larger 2.0-litre diesel engine, and despite being a bigger car, it will feel like a proper step up. You will notice stronger pulling power, more effortless highway cruising and better overall performance. It also feels more stable and composed at speed, which suits your kind of long-distance driving. Refinement levels are also good, making it a comfortable car for extended journeys. The Seltos diesel is easier to drive in the city and feels more compact and user-friendly, but on highways and rough rural roads, it does not feel as robust or as planted as the 7XO.One important point is the budget. The 7XO diesel variants may go slightly above your Rs 18 lakh on-road range, depending on the variant and location, so you will need to check exact pricing.

I currently use a Maruti Ciaz petrol from 2019 and am planning to replace it with another 1500 cc SUV priced around ₹18 lakhs. My monthly city running is less than 1,000 km. Please suggest a comfortable car.

The key point here is what you are upgrading from. The Ciaz has one of the best rear seats, and at this price point, no SUV really matches that level of rear-seat space and comfort. We would have recommended the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara or the Hyryder, especially since you already own a car from the same brand. However, both are on the weaker side when it comes to rear-seat space and overall comfort, so they will feel like a step down compared to your current car.For a proper upgrade, you are better off looking at the Seltos, Creta or even the Elevate. The Kia Seltos would be the first recommendation. The new generation is a larger car than before, and that reflects in its cabin. It feels more spacious and the rear seat is comfortable enough for family use, making it the closest you will get to a proper upgrade in this segment. The Hyundai Creta is also a very good option. It offers a similar level of comfort and uses the same 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, which is refined, smooth and easy to drive. It is slightly smaller on the inside compared to the Seltos, but still comfortable for most family needs. The Honda Elevate is the more sensible and slightly more affordable option. It offers good space and a comfortable ride, and in fact has very good rear seat legroom, but the engine is not as refined as the Kia and Hyundai cars, which you will notice in everyday driving.

I live in Chennai and want a car with good performance and safety, and preferably better mileage. I am considering the Seltos HTK(O) DCT and the Kushaq 1.0 AT Classic Plus. My thought process is that I can upgrade to a bigger car after a year or so, when I sell my wife’s Venue DCT, and she can then drive the Kushaq Classic Plus. My monthly commuting will be around 1,000-1,200km, with 80% city use. Open to other suggestions as well. My budget for the Kushaq is ₹14 lakh, whereas for the Seltos it goes up to ₹18 lakh.

Choose the Skoda Kushaq 1.0 AT Classic Plus. For Chennai’s 80% city use and your budget, it delivers five-star safety and a smoother-shifting automatic. With your usage involving mostly stop-and-go driving, the Kushaq’s 8-speed torque-converter avoids the occasional hesitation of Kia’s DCT and potential clutch-pack wear. It’s easy to drive and park, and its five-star Global NCAP (adult and child) rating adds to the sense of safety. In city traffic, the smaller 1.0 TSI will also be more fuel efficient than the turbo-DCT Seltos. The one thing you give up is outright performance. The Kia Seltos 1.5-turbo DCT makes about 160hp and feels quicker, especially above 60kph and on highways. If you value stronger performance and can stretch your budget, then consider the Kia Seltos 1.5-turbo DCT.On the test drive, do a 15-minute crawl in traffic-like loops. Check low-speed creep smoothness and city ride comfort over speed breakers and rough patches.
