The A-Class Sedan (or Limousine, as Mercedes likes to call it) is the brand's smallest sedan that sits below the C-Class in the line-up. It replaces the CLA four-door coupé, and is meant to offer a more practical and spacious rear seat than its predecessor. It's offered in three guises, the A 200 petrol, A 200d diesel and the sporty AMG A 35, all three of which are locally assembled. Along with its SUV sibling, the GLA, it is the starting point to the Mercedes-Benz range in India.

it may be the entry level model, but Mercedes has made sure there is nothing 'entry level' about the way the A-Class is specified. It is available in only a fully loaded trim and is packed with equipment like a 10.25in digital instruments screen, a 10.25in touchscreen, connected car tech, a large sunroof, wireless charging, ambient lighting and lots more. Its two mainstay engines, the 163hp 1.3 turbo-petrol A 200 and the 150hp 2.0 turbo-diesel A 200d aren't the last word in performance or excitement, but they're refined and get the job done. The standard A-Class isn't particularly thrilling to drive, but it does come with tidy body control, light steering and an incredibly comfortable ride. You do, however, get a bit of road noise. Another big highlight in this 'entry level' sedan segment is rear seat space and comfort, which is actually better than even some bigger Mercs. At over Rs 40 lakh, the prices aren't quite what most would consider 'entry level', though, but then they haven't cut corners with the specification either. The 306hp 2.0-litre petrol A 35 with AWD is quite attractively priced for the performance it offers, and is a lot easier to live with than the old AMG CLA 45. A great entry point to the world of AMG high performance.
