In a bid to meet growing demands for battery-powered vehicles, Volvo plans on ramping up production of EVs, and has a target of producing 10 lakh electrified cars by 2025.

To reach the production target, the Swedish carmaker aims to produce two hybrid versions of every model in its range, with the first all-electric car expected to make its debut in 2019.

“It is a deliberately ambitions target,” said Volvo boss Hakan Samuelsson. “It’s going to be a challenge, but Volvo wants to be at the forefront of this shift to electrification”.

Volvo says it has been working on this shift to electric vehicles for five years by developing two platforms (one for large cars and one for small cars), both compatible with hybrid and electric powertrains. The carmaker will use the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform for its 90 and 60 series models, while the smaller 40 series will be underpinned by Volvo’s Compact Modular Architecture (CMA).

In 2015, Volvo announced the launch of an all-electric rival to Tesla for 2019, which, the company claimed, could travel approximately 520km on a full charge. Volvo says the years between 2020 and 2025 are a “period of critical acceptance” for the electric vehicle, as it aims to make electric cars part of the mainstream market.

As of now, there’s no information on the carmaker’s EV strategy for India.
