    Tata Motors launches Aria 4x2

Tata Motors has launched the cheaper, 4x2 version of the Aria crossover. Prices of the new 4x2 Aria starts from Rs 11.61 lakh for the base Pure variant, going upto Rs 14.26 lakh for the top-end Prestige variant (ex-showroom Delhi).

Launched in October 2010 last year in its 4x4 avatar, the flagship model has been a slow seller for Tata - its steep price tag playing spoilsport. The Aria 4x4 is priced at Rs 12.91lakh for the base variant, which goes upto Rs 15.5 lakh for the fully-loaded variant.

The Aria is a serious alternative to the hugely accomplished Toyota Innova. It may not have the Innova’s handling finess, its fit-and-finish or its tractability, but it’s got the better ride, has a more powerful engine, has a lot of features and looks much better. Although the Aria comes loaded with advanced features, for being a Tata product, the crossover has been steeply priced.

To counter this issue, Tata is now offering the crossover in 4x2 version, with the new base variant being Rs 1.64 lakh cheaper than the base 4x4 Aria. The 4x2 Aria is powered by the same 2.2-litre DiCOR engine from its sibling and develops identical power figures of 138bhp and 32.6kgm of torque.

Speaking on the occasion, P M Telang, managing director - India Operations, Tata Motors said, "As the first Indian 4x4 crossover, the Tata Aria has broken a new path for Tata Motors. With the introduction of the Aria 4x2, we make the range comprehensive. The pleasure of the Aria, combining the finesse of a sedan with the muscle of an SUV, can now be availed by a larger customer segment."

The Aria 4x2 comes with a feature list that matches its 4x4 sibling. However, the new base Pure trim level misses out on driver and passenger airbags, steering mounted audio controls, reverse camera, height adjustable driver seat and chilled glove box. Key features like ABS with EBD, 2 DIN music system, USB and AUX port, dual AC, keyless entry and electrically adjustable outside rear view mirrors are still available in the base variant.

Will the new pricing boost the crossover’s sales? Only time will tell.
