The new generation Mercedes-Benz E-class has been seen again, this time wearing minimal camouflage. The new E-class will be up to date with Mercedes' latest design language seen on the S and C-class. The new E-class is likely to be slightly larger dimensionally, but this won’t affect the overall kerb weight due to Mercedes’ MRA platform.
The new version is said to be heavily influenced by the current S-class and will borrow heavily from the flagship saloon. The E-class is likely to feature the same engines as the current car, at least initially. It could also bring back the straight-six engine (all turbocharged) to the Mercedes fold. Twin-turbo options will yield the most power from the 3.0-litre petrol engine, capable of approximately 360bhp; a 2.9-litre is expected too. The MRA architecture which will underpin the car, is designed to accommodate plug-in hybrid technology, which could lead to ultra-frugal petrol and diesel hybrids to feature in the range.
Mercedes will also expand the Maybach portfolio with an E-class Maybach version. The car will offer improved legroom and upgraded interiors with subtle design modifications on the outside. The Maybach version will be available globally, unlike the long wheelbase version which is only expected in select countries and will be priced at a premium over the standard.
