Mercedes has launched the GLE SUV in India with prices starting at Rs 58.9 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the GLE 250 d and Rs 69.90 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the GLE 350 d. The new GLE is essentially a facelifted version of the popular M-class SUV.
The Mercedes GLE gets the brand’s latest nomenclature, but retains its predecessor’s underpinnings. The GLE comes with two diesel engine options, the twin turbocharged, 2.1-litre 250 d developing 204bhp and 51kgm of torque and the 3.0 litre, turbocharged V6 350 d which develops 258bhp and 63.2kgm of torque. A major change on the facelifted SUV is the nine-speed automatic gearbox with paddle shifters, as against the seven-speed unit on the older car.
The GLE's front fascia now sports more sculpted fenders, a new bonnet, with headlamps and the double-slatted nose grille reminiscent of the new C-class and E-class'. The rear gets more contemporary-looking LED tail-lights. The interiors get improved materials, a simpler-looking centre console with an 7.0-inch touchscreen interface for the COMAND infotainment system, ambient lighting and a three-spoke steering wheel, replacing the four-spoke unit of the M-class.
Standard features on the GLE include Dynamic Select drive mode selection, six airbags, 4Matic all-wheel-drive system, Downhill Speed Regulation system to regulate speeds between 2kph and 18kph, Crosswind Assist system that uses specific wheel braking to keep the car on course during strong cross winds and climate control (dual-zone for the 250 d and three-zone for the 350 d). In addition, the GLE 350 d gets features such as memory front seats, Airmatic suspension, key-less go, COMAND Online display system and 360-degree camera.
At the launch, Roland Folger, MD and CEO, Mercedes-Benz India said that both, the GLE 250 d and 350 d will be locally assembled at the company's plant in Pune from the start to cater to the demand of the India market.
The Mercedes-Benz GLE will rival the BMW X5 and the Volvo XC90.
