Indian government launches DigiLocker app

The government of India has launched an application called DigiLocker to enable users to store important documents in a digital format on a cloud-based system for easier access. This removes the need for drivers and riders to carry around physical copies of their driving licenses and vehicle registration documents while driving. 

The state has yet to equip the traffic police with a relevant app to authenticate or verify the e-documents. "The verifying official needs to have the mobile app to check the authenticity of the soft documents", said a transport ministry official.

To sign-up, a user is required to type in his or her mobile number, which will be authenticated by an OTP (one-time password) followed by the user selecting a username and password. After the DigiLocker account has been created, users can provide their Aadhaar numbers (issued by UIDAI) and start uploading the documents.

Apart from the driving license and registration certificate, users can use the app even storing other documents and academic certificates. The app also has an eSign feature that allows the user to self-attest his or her documents.  

Operated by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), the app is currently available only on Google Play store for free.
