The much-awaited VW Golf GTI, set to arrive in India as a CBU, will rival the Mini Cooper S.

Volkswagen India is set to launch its performance-focused Golf GTI hatchback on May 26. The Golf GTI Mk 8.5 (a facelift of the eighth-gen VW car) will be brought to India as a full import. The first batch’s 150 units have already been accounted for, and bookings have been stopped for now.

Volkswagen Golf GTI price expectations and delivery timeline

Rs 60 lakh price likely; deliveries starting next month

As reported earlier, the Golf GTI’s on-road price will likely be around Rs 60 lakh. If that holds true, the hot hatch will be the most expensive Volkswagen car in India, even surpassing the new Tiguan R Line SUV, which is priced at Rs 56.7 lakh (on-road, Delhi). Deliveries will start in June at select Volkswagen showrooms across the country.

Volkswagen Golf GTI engine and gearbox

2-litre TSI engine mated to dual-clutch transmission

Under the hood, the Golf GTI will feature a 2-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine, belting out 265hp and 370Nm. Transmission duties will be handled by a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic, sending power to the front wheels only. The Golf GTI has a claimed 0-100kph time of just 5.9 seconds, with an electronically limited 250kph top speed.

Exterior highlights

The Golf GTI gets an illuminated VW roundel and a variant badge on the thin upper grille, Matrix LED headlights, and a large honeycomb-patterned air dam flanked by X-shaped fog lights on the front bumper. In profile, red ‘GTI’ badges and brake callipers, the latter of which hide behind the 18-inch alloy wheels, add to the sporty look. Even the rear gets a GTI badge placed on the tailgate. Other highlights include a roof spoiler, smoked LED tail-lights (not connected), and twin chrome exhaust tips.

Volkswagen will offer four colour options with the Golf GTI: Kings Red, Grenadilla Black, Oryx White, and Moonstone Grey.

Inside, the Golf GTI features a leather-wrapped sports steering wheel with a GTI clasp, and the screen pair comprises a 12.9-inch touchscreen and a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display. Others include wireless charging, ambient lights, a 7-speaker sound system, panoramic sunroof, and tartan seat upholstery with red accents.
