Nissan Gravite CNG: What’s new?

The retrofit CNG kit comprises two 25-litre CNG tanks, stacked vertically. This effectively takes away all available boot space, but the Gravite still retains the 7-seat configuration, which is its biggest USP. With seven seats and twin CNG tanks, the Gravite is still a packaging marvel.

Nissan says the CNG kit is an ICAT-approved system for certified safety and reliability, and it has been developed and quality-assured by Motozen. Nissan is also offering a 3-year/1,00,000km third-party warranty on the kit components.

CNG tanks in the boot effectively leave no luggage space.

The Gravite is powered by a 72hp/96Nm 1.0-litre 3-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine, available with 5-speed MT and AMT gearbox options. The CNG kit is likely only being offered with the manual variants, although Nissan hasn’t quoted specific outputs or claimed efficiency with the CNG kit. However, it will come with a dedicated fuel-filling point under the fuel lid, aiding convenience. For now, the CNG kit will be available across 60 cities in 16 states.

Nissan Gravite CNG is different from upcoming Triber CNG

What’s important to note is that the Gravite CNG is fundamentally different from the upcoming Renault Triber CNG showcased recently. The latter gets an underbody twin CNG tank setup, enabled by thorough re-engineering of the platform. The Gravite, meanwhile, uses the older architecture, where the CNG tanks are placed in the boot. Renault had also introduced a retrofit CNG kit for the Triber last year, although it did not get the twin-tank setup.
