New Kia Niro gets a purpose-built taxi variant

Named the Kia Niro Plus, the bespoke taxi is based on the first generation Niro EV.

Kia has unveiled a purpose-built taxi variant of the Niro for the Korean market, which is based on the first-gen Niro EV. Formerly known as the e-Niro, the new Niro Plus variant sports minimal exterior changes, and a majority of it being made to the interior.

Kia Niro Plus: what’s different?

In order to increase interior space for passengers, Kia has made the Niro Plus 10mm longer and 80mm taller than the first-gen Niro EV. Additionally, the SUV also gets door reflectors and assist handles that improve safety and accessibility. 

 
 

The Korean automaker has equipped the Niro Plus with a driver-focused all-in-one display in an effort to reduce multiple screens and displays. Along with improving driver safety and convenience, the display provides on-screen information that includes navigation, a digital tachograph, voice recognition and a taxi meter app.

 
 

Kia has stated that it aims to take the first step into the purpose-built vehicle segment via the Niro Plus. The automaker plans to introduce its first bespoke PBV by 2025, and the vehicle will be compatible with several different model shapes and sizes. Meanwhile, Kia had introduced the Niro EV in India by signing an MoU with the Andhra Pradesh government to boost electric mobility back in 2018. In 2020, the automaker also showcased the e-Niro as a technological demonstration during the Auto Expo.

Kia India EV launches: 2022

The automaker is currently working on launching the EV6, with bookings opening on May 26. Following its launch, Kia will introduce the new e-Niro and work alongside Hyundai on introducing six new EVs in India by 2024.
