The Maruti Suzuki Celerio has received a 3-star rating for adult occupant protection (AOP) and a 2-star rating for child occupant protection (COP) in Global NCAP crash tests. The hatchback scored 18.04 points out of 34 in adult protection and 18.57 points out of 49 in child protection.

Global NCAP also tested the Celerio in its 2-airbag configuration, which received 2 stars for adult protection and 1 star for child protection. With six airbags and ESC now standard, the updated Celerio achieved a higher score, reflecting the impact of the added safety equipment.
Maruti Suzuki Celerio standard safety features
The Celerio tested by Global NCAP came equipped with six airbags, ESC, and 3-point seat belts with reminders for all seats. ISOFIX mounts are provided on the rear outboard seats, and the front seats get seatbelt pretensioners and load limiters. The model also includes ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, and complies with UN 127 pedestrian protection norms. The car tested was made in India for the domestic market.

The Celerio scored 18.04 points out of 34, giving it a 3-star adult protection rating. In the frontal test, protection for the head and neck of both front occupants was good, while the driver’s chest protection was weak and the passenger’s was adequate. Knee protection was marginal due to possible contact with structures behind the dashboard. The bodyshell and footwell were rated unstable and not capable of taking further load.
In the side impact test, head and chest protection were marginal, abdomen protection was adequate and pelvis protection was good. In the side pole test, head and pelvis protection were good, while chest and abdomen protection were marginal. ESC performance met Global NCAP requirements.
Maruti Suzuki Celerio child occupant protection
The Celerio scored 18.57 points out of 49, giving it a 2-star child protection rating. In the frontal test, the forward-facing seat for the 3-year-old allowed head exposure, with poor neck and chest protection. The rearward-facing seat for the 18-month-old also allowed head exposure, and chest protection was rated poor.
In the side impact test, the 18-month-old seat offered full protection, while the 3-year-old seat could not contain the head during the impact.
The Celerio provides 3-point seatbelts for all seats, and displays the required warning against placing a rearward-facing child seat in the front. However, the front passenger airbag cannot be switched off, and child seats were only approved for the rear positions, not the front or rear centre. These factors contributed to the 2-star child safety result.
Global NCAP’s comment
Global NCAP noted that while the Celerio benefits from updated safety equipment, its unstable bodyshell, marginal crash protection in key areas, and limitations in child seat performance kept the ratings at 3 stars for adults and 2 stars for children. GNCAP added that improvements to structural integrity and child restraint compatibility would be essential for the model to achieve higher safety ratings in future assessments.
