In a regulatory filing published on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) website, Hyundai Motor India has confirmed that it has been imposed a demand of over Rs 22 crore by the Office of the Commissioner of Customs, Chennai - II (Imports). The order received by the company on April 21, 2026, was issued due to an alleged misclassification of air purifier imports.
What is Hyundai India being accused of?
According to the order issued by the Office of the Commissioner of Customs, Chennai, Hyundai allegedly misclassified its air purifier imports to claim a concessional duty rate of 7.5 percent. Due to claiming a lower concessional duty, Hyundai fell short of the total customs duty payment. Because of this, the Commissioner of Customs is imposing the differential duty of Rs 7,27,44,961 along with interest (interest not quantified), penalty of Rs 7,27,44,961 and a redemption fine of Rs 7.47 crore.
How has Hyundai India responded to the order?
Hyundai said that it is reviewing the order and options to file an appeal against the order. It has also stated that the order has not affected its finances, operations or any other activity.
