Indian Motorcycle prices slashed after drop in customs duty

Indian Motorcycle has announced revised pricing for its entire line-up in our country, which includes a massive discount of Rs 1.89 lakh on the manufacturer’s most-affordable model – the Indian Scout Sixty. The maximum reduction in price on a single model is Rs 2.99 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom, India) for the Indian Chieftain, which retailed for Rs 35 lakh prior to the price revision.

For those unaware, the Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) sent out a notification last month, stating that custom duties on completely build units (CBU) has dropped from 75 percent to 50 percent for motorcycles with displacement above 800cc. But that's not all, custom duties on motorcycles under 800cc have also reduced from 60 percent to 50 percent.

Most motorcycle manufacturers are benefitting from this move; except for Triumph since it brings in most of its offerings via the CKD route, which has seen a 5 percent rise. Interestingly, CBU imports aren’t exactly seeing a saving of 25 percent, here’s why.

Commenting on the price cut on import duty and prices of the Indian line-up, Pankaj Dubey, managing director and country head, Polaris India, said, “We are glad that the government has rationalised the import duty structure to 50 percent across the range for imported bikes. The new attractive price of our products available in India will definitely lead to more sales. This will also create opportunities for enthusiasts to buy our iconic products and be a part of the Indian Motorcycle family.”
