Bike, scooter sales April 2023: Honda records 71 percent MoM growth

Monthly sales figures for the top six manufacturers in the Indian two-wheeler industry for the first month of FY2024 (April 2023-March 2024) have been revealed and here’s how each manufacturer fared.

Hero MotoCorp: 3,86,184 units

Hero MotoCorp consistently leads the Indian two-wheeler market, but compared to its sales figure for March 2023 (5,02,730 units), it reported a decline of 23.18 percent. Even compared to its figure for April 2022, which stood at 3,98,490 units, Hero’s sales have slid 3 percent.

Recently, the first images of the entry-level Harley-Davidson bike have surfaced, which is made in collaboration with Hero MotoCorp. Hero is also set to launch two new models in India and to read more about those, click here.

In April 2023, Hero exported 9,923 units. 

Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI): 3,38,289 units

With sales of over 3 lakh units last month, HMSI seems to be turning back on track and it reported a massive 71.2 percent increase over its unusually low sales figure for March 2023 (1,97,512 units). When compared to its sales figure for April 2022 (3,18,732 units), HMSI posted an increase of 6.13 percent. Honda exported 36,458 units in April 2023.

HMSI has recently made some changes to its management and its new CEO, Tsutsumu Otani, replaced the erstwhile Atsushi Ogata. 

TVS Motor Company: 2,32,956 units

Hosur-based TVS Motor Co. reported a slight 3.2 percent decline in its sales numbers, when compared to its 2,40,780 units-strong figure for March 2023. However, when compared to its sales figure for April 2022 (1,80,553 units), it reported a 29 percent increase. 

TVS rejigged its Raider 125 line-up recently and launched a new entry-level single-seat trim.

The above mentioned numbers do not include sales figures for the iQube electric scooter.

TVS exported 61,830 units in April 2023. 

Bajaj Auto: 1,81,828 units

Chakan-based Bajaj Auto reported an increase of 19.3 percent when compared to its figure for March 2023 (1,52,287 units). The interesting thing here is that Bajaj nearly doubled its sales figure this April, when compared to its numbers for April 2022 (93,233 units), recording an increase of 95 percent. 

Bajaj exported 1,06,157 units in April 2023. 

It is to be mentioned here that Bajaj Auto has shared its sales figures including the numbers for Chetak Technology Limited as well. The company doesn’t provide a break-up between the two.

Royal Enfield: 68,881 units

Royal Enfield bettered its March 2023 sales numbers (59,884 units) by 15 percent in April 2023. The Chennai-based bikemaker also recorded an increase of 27.9 percent over its figure for April 2022 (53,852 units). The manufacturer exported 4,255 units in April 2023.

Suzuki: 67,259 units

Managing to sell 67,259 units in April 2023, saw Suzuki record a 7.9 percent decline over its figure for March 2023 (73,069 units). However, compared to its figure for last April, the company recorded an increase of 23.8 percent. Recently, the Hamamatsu-based brand’s Indian arm, Suzuki Motorcycle India rolled out its 7 millionth unit. Suzuki India exported 21,472 units in April 2023.
