While retaining their names, the small-capacity Speed, Thruxton and Scrambler bikes, along with the new Tracker, get a downsized 350cc engine that lets them slip under the lower tax bracket.

As we’ve anticipated for a few months now, Triumph has launched the downsized iteration of the popular 400cc platform in a 350cc avatar that benefits from the lower 18 percent GST rate. Triumph has also decided to continue using the ‘400’ nameplate on these models instead of rebranding them with more displacement-specific model names.

The models in the new 350cc range are powered by a 349cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled engine with an 89mm bore and 56.1mm stroke. The previous unit featured an 89mm bore and 64mm stroke, which is how the downsizing has been achieved.

The new Speed T4 produces 29hp at 7,500rpm and 31Nm at 5,500rpm – a slight drop from the outgoing 398.15cc single that makes 31hp at 7,000rpm and 36Nm at 5,000rpm.

On the Speed 400, Scrambler 400 and Scrambler 400 XC, peak output figures are now 37hp at 8,500rpm and 32Nm at 7,000rpm – down from 40hp at 8,000rpm and 37.5Nm at 6,500rpm.

Triumph has also introduced the new Tracker 400 to the Indian market. However, unlike the international-spec bike, this one gets the newer, smaller 350cc platform. It joins the Thruxton 400 to get the new engine in the most powerful state of tune, producing 40hp at 8,750rpm and 32Nm at 7,500rpm.
