Royal Enfield Scram 440 performance tested and explained

We break down the acceleration, roll-ons, and braking of the Royal Enfield Scram 440, which is an evolution of the Scram 411.

The Scram 440 is meant for riders who want more punch without losing out on the signature character of the engine that powered the OG Himalayan 411. The 440 makes use of a bored-out version (bore increased by 3mm) of the engine from the 411. It has a slight bump in power figures, and the peak power and torque are also made slightly earlier in the rev range. Another major difference is that the 440 gets a 6-speed gearbox, as opposed to the 5-speed unit in the 411, for better highway cruising abilities. We have also listed the figures from our test with the 411 to check out how much of a difference there is compared to before, and here is what our tests revealed.

During our test, the conditions were mainly dry, but with a few wet patches on the road.

Up until 80kph, there is a minor difference in acceleration. But in the sprint to 100kph, the Scram 440 completed the run in around 11 seconds, making it just over a second quicker than the Scram 411. The bike has a slick gearbox but a slightly heavy clutch action.

The 443cc engine in the bike makes 25.4hp at 6,250rpm and 34Nm of peak torque at 4,000rpm.

In our roll-on acceleration tests, the bike took 2.56 seconds in the second gear run, 4.63 seconds in the third gear run, and 4.46 seconds in the fourth gear test. Compared to the older Scram 411, it is noticeably quicker with the difference being around 1.5 seconds in the 50-80kph dash.

The bike gets disc brakes at both ends with dual-channel ABS. In our braking test, we noticed that the 440 was just slightly better than the 411. But, compared to the 411, the ABS did not feel as intrusive under hard braking. For experienced riders, ABS at the rear can also be disabled.

Like all Royal Enfield models, the Scram 440 variants are differentiated mainly with colour options. Force Blue is the most expensive option and Trail Green is the most affordable variant. The 440 also comes standard with switchable ABS and an LED headlight across both variants.
