The Maruti Ciaz is big on style, space, luxury and technology. Here’s why it could be the premium midsize sedan you’ve always wanted to have.

How do you know you’ve arrived? Well, there are several markers of success, and a Maruti Suzuki Ciaz parked in your driveway is one among them. Launched in 2014, the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz recently crossed 3 lakh units in sales. There are, of course, many reasons for its successful run. But prime among them is the fact that Maruti’s flagship sedan always looked and felt like it belonged to a segment up. The current iteration of the premium midsize sedan takes the story forward brilliantly.
And, while it does that, it is complemented by the might of NEXA.
The premium sales channel, launched by Maruti Suzuki about six years ago, has since redefined automobile retail in India. LOOKS OF A WINNER
The Maruti Ciaz is a big car and an elegant one at that. That poise owes a lot to its design. The distinctive and instantly recognisable front grille is flanked by the eye-catching and effective LED Projector auto headlamps with DRLs, and the Ciaz also gets LED fog lights. Chrome strips at the top and bottom edge of the grille enhance the car’s inherent premiumness. The rear, too, is striking with new LED segments within the tail-lamps.
ACE OF SPACE
The premium, lounge-like feel continues when you step into the sedan’s expansive cabin that is adorned with the best of leather. The Ciaz, which is 4.5m long and 1.7m wide, is among the biggest cars in its segment, and that translates into immense space, all of which is alloyed with tasteful luxury. Occupants at the rear, including really tall folks, will love the legroom, even with the front seats pushed back. They will also appreciate the adjustable head restraints, the rear AC vents, sunshade and reading lamps. If you are the kind to always take the wheel, the front also has its highlights. These include a classy birchwood trim and tastefully applied silver accents. SmartPlay Studio, Maruti Suzuki’s slick in-car infotainment system, helps drivers stay connected while on the move, and call, navigate, play music and more, all at the touch of a single button, or via voice-control. The Ciaz is not to be outdone when it comes to boot space, as well — at 510 litres, it’s again a class-leading offering.
TECH FORWARD
But what is Smart Hybrid Tech and how does it work? The technology, which uses ISG (Integrated Starter Generator) and an advanced dual-battery setup comprising of a Lithium-Ion and Lead-Acid battery, has three main highlights. These include Idle Start/Stop, Regenerative Braking, and Torque Assist. With Idle Start/Stop, the Smart Hybrid technology automatically shuts off the engine when you come to a halt at, say, a traffic signal. Once you are ready to go, simply depressing the clutch restarts the car. This makes sure there is no fuel loss when the Ciaz is at idle. Plus, the electricity generated through regenerative braking is used by the ISG to keep the Ciaz’s dual battery set-up charged. The kinetic energy produced while slowing the car down is converted to electric energy and then stored in the car’s advanced dual battery setup. This energy is utilised by the ISG to assist the engine during acceleration, enhancing the Ciaz’s performance.
POWER AND PERFORMANCE
At the heart of the Maruti Ciaz is a highly responsive and powerful K15 petrol engine that comes with enhanced thermal efficiency. As impressive as its numbers — 105hp at 6,000rpm and 138Nm of torque at 4,400rpm — is the Smart Hybrid Technology. The Smart Hybrid tech delivers not just low emissions but enhanced fuel economy. The Ciaz delivers an ARAI-certified mileage figure of 21.56kpl for the manual and 20.28kpl for the automatic.
DRIVE OF YOUR LIFE
All of that technology, when combined with the traditional refinement of the K15 engine, makes the Ciaz a delight to drive, both in the city and out of town. Power is on tap right across the rev range, from as low as 1,800rpm and that means instant responsiveness in and around our congested cities. The sedan’s light steering also helps in making it highly manoeuvrable. The Ciaz’s gets a slick 4-speed automatic gearbox that delivers convenience and enhances the joy of driving the car. The automatic gearbox shifts cleanly and quickly and is equipped with a ‘2’ and ‘L’ button lever to enhance ease of driving and for additional engine braking. If the Ciaz is a breeze to drive around town, it comes into its own on the highways, and one can comfortably cruise for hours. The sedan feels planted at high speeds and ride quality over all kinds of terrain inspires a lot of confidence. The Ciaz’s relatively high ground clearance of 170mm also takes care of potholes and other such evil stuff without a fuss. The premium sedan also has a comprehensive listing of safety features, including dual airbags, ABS, Speed Alert System, and, in the automatic variant, hill hold assist which prevents the car from sliding backwards when you stop on an incline, thus making it easier to start uphill from a stop.

Big on the outside and inside, both luxurious and powerful, and packed with a ton of technology and safety equipment, the Maruti Ciaz ticks all the boxes for a plush family sedan. It’s got the go to match its show. The Ciaz delivers in this age of stratospheric fuel prices, shockingly good fuel economy and a comfortable ride that will be appreciated by both driving enthusiasts and their passengers. As always, like all Maruti Suzukis, it offers a lot of bang for your buck.
