The MG M9 went on sale a few months ago as the first all-electric luxury MPV for the Indian market. MG has priced the M9 between established luxury MPVs like the Kia Carnival and the much pricier Toyota Vellfire. If you’re on the hunt for a new luxury MPV, listed below are the M9’s most prominent strengths and weaknesses.

Well-priced by luxury MPV standards

M9 price is much closer to Carnival than Vellfire

Price (Rs)69.90 lakh1.22-1.32 crore63.91 lakh

The MG M9 ex-showroom price is Rs 69.90 lakh, and the model is available only in the fully loaded variant, which is quite compelling as far as luxury MPVs go. At this price point, the M9 undercuts the Vellfire by up to a whopping Rs 62.10 lakh, though the Carnival is Rs 5.99 lakh more affordable than the MG MPV.

Middle row is exceptionally comfortable

Heated, cooled, massaging and electrically adjustable captain seats

Being a luxury MPV, the M9’s second row is crucial for buyers, and thankfully, it delivers on this front. You get a pair of 16-way powered captain seats that can be reclined and feature deployable ottomans. Further enhancing the M9’s second-row comfort are rear entertainment screens, heating, cooling, and massaging functions for the captain seats, ambient lighting, a panoramic sunroof, and a powered boss mode that slides the front passenger seat forward to open up more legroom at the rear.

Very refined

All-electric powertrain keeps NVH levels in check

The M9 comes with a 90kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery pack that powers a front-mounted electric motor developing 245hp and 350Nm. As we found in our review of the M9, this all-electric powertrain yields excellent refinement and overall NVH levels. Additionally, MG has done well to insulate the M9’s occupants from road, wind and suspension noises.

With the pros out of the way, let’s discuss a couple of the M9’s cons.

Not ideal for travelling long distances

Claimed range of 548km

The M9 offers an MIDC-certified range of 548km, which is more than substantial in urban conditions. However, buyers who frequently go on cross-country trips would likely be better off with one of the M9’s rivals, since its real-world range can dip to as low as 300km, and India’s highway charging infrastructure still isn’t all that reliable.

Stiff suspension setup

Low-speed ride comfort may not be as plush as expected

The M9’s suspension is tuned on the stiffer side as standard, allowing for a planted composure at high speeds. However, the downside of stiffer suspension tuning is a busy low-speed ride, and combined with the mass of the battery pack in its floor, the M9 can end up transmitting surface imperfections to occupants at city speeds.

All prices are ex-showroom, India.
