I’m 62 and retired, with a budget of around Rs 10 lakh. My usage isn’t regular: I drive in the city about ten times a month and outside the city about once a month. A manual is also fine for me. Which car offers the best value for money?

For your limited usage, the Maruti Suzuki Swift is a safe bet. It is compact, gets Maruti's strong reliability and hassle-free nature, is easy to drive in the city thanks to its dimensions and drivability and is efficient too. The Z12 engine is smooth, fuss-free and zippy in the city, while the AMT gearbox takes out the stress of gear changes in traffic. The ZXI variant will fit in your budget and comes equipped with essentials like a reversing camera to make parking a lot easier in tight spots. The Swift also has light steering, comfortable seats, and the positioning of the seats also makes it easy to get in and out of. If you still wish for a manual, the light clutch and easy-to-slot gears will impress you. Overall, for your needs, the Swift is the best option.

Hello Autocar India! We’re a family of three looking to replace our 2012 Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 VXi. It will be our second car, since we already own a Honda City bought in December 2025. The second car will be used for emergencies and for places with narrow roads or tight parking spots. We’ve shortlisted the Maruti Suzuki Swift LXi and the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Era. The second car will be used mostly in the city, while occasional highway trips will be done in the Honda. Since we’ve clocked only about 2,900 km on the City so far, it’s hard to estimate how much the second car will be driven. Is it worth stepping up to the Swift VXi AMT or the Grand i10 Nios Magna MT? I also have a couple of doubts: 1. The Z12E engine was launched only in 2024, so it isn’t as tried and tested as Hyundai’s 1.2 Kappa. What are your thoughts on its long-term reliability? 2. Since the Z12E is a three-cylinder engine, how will its refinement hold up over time? Thank you in advance!

The Maruti Suzuki Swift VXI AMT would be the right car for your requirements. The Swift is the newer car and feels better outside and inside. It also feels better suited to city use. The Z12E engine is tuned for low-end power and works well enough with the AMT gearbox. While the Z12E is a relatively new engine, you shouldn't have any trouble with long-term reliability. Suzuki's engines are renowned to be reliable and go on for years and years, provided you stick to regular maintenance schedules. The Z12E engine is also refined for a three-cylinder unit. It runs quiet and you can only feel a buzz at idle if you really pay attention. The engine will thrum when you rev it hard but that will be a rarity in your use case.Go ahead with the Maruti Suzuki Swift VXI AMT. It'll be a good second car to your Honda City.
