Please suggest a good new automatic car within a ₹8 lakh budget.

Without knowing your exact requirements, it will be hard to suggest any one option as there are plenty of models available across body styles within a budget of Rs 8 lakh. Your Rs 8 lakh cap rules out most CVT or torque converter automatic options, and you'll have to go for an AMT.
If you want a small hatchback for the city, pick the Tata Tiago AMT, which comes with a solid build, a decent features list and a 4-star safety rating. If you prefer a sedan, go for the Maruti Suzuki Dzire AMT, which stands out for its relatively spacious cabin, comfy ride quality and a 5-star crash safety rating.
However, if you prefer an SUV bodystyle, consider the Hyundai Exter AMT, which comes with a smooth 1.2-litre engine and a lengthy features list. Do note, you'll have to settle for the entry-level automatic variants of the latter two, given your budget.

While there are quite a few petrol automatic options within your Rs 12 lakh budget, the most fuel-efficient options include the Maruti Suzuki Baleno AMT (and its twin the Toyota Glanza), Maruti Suzuki Dzire AMT, Maruti Suzuki Swift AMT, Maruti Suzuki Fronx AMT (and its twin the Toyota Taisor). All feature AMT gearbox options. While AMTs aren't the most sophisticated or smoothest type of automatic transmission, they are fine for average city driving. What sets AMTs apart from other automatics is real-world fuel economy, which is on par and sometimes even better than a comparable manual's. Of the above options, we'd choose between the Baleno, Glanza, Fronx and Taisor. Their larger 1.2-litre four-cylinder engine makes them feel a bit zippier than the Swift and Dzire that use 1.2-litre three-cylinder units.

Hi, I am currently using a Maruti Suzuki Wagon R LXI CNG. My monthly running is around 900 km, with approximately 80% of my driving on highways. I have noticed some performance limitations on highways, so I am planning to upgrade. Which car would be more suitable for my usage pattern? Also, should I go for a CNG or a petrol car?

CNG cars are cheaper to run, but the flipside is a drop in performance. For someone who drives primarily on the highway, a CNG is not ideal. We'd recommend a petrol engine, which will give you more power and help you comfortably maintain highway speeds. If you are comfortable with a Maruti Suzuki Wagon R, the larger 1.2-litre petrol engine is a natural upgrade. The engine gives it much more zip than the 1.0-litre unit of your model, and you will feel the benefits on highway drives. Do note, the tall Wagon R isn't the ideal highway vehicle. The Maruti Suzuki Dzire is a good pick for your needs. It's spacious and good to drive, and what will ease your comfort out on the highway is its 5-star Global NCAP crash rating.
