I want to buy a new car and have shortlisted the Tata Tiago CNG AMT and the Hyundai Exter CNG Manual. My primary requirements are fuel efficiency and driving comfort. I also considered the Tata Tiago EV, but I am somewhat apprehensive about buying an EV due to range anxiety and the relatively limited driving range. I do not have the budget for higher-range EVs. My usage will be predominantly in the city, with an expected daily running of around 30-40 km. I would appreciate your suggestions on which option would be the better choice for my needs.

If you can arrange for home charging, the Tiago EV is an excellent pick. It is very user-friendly, and its driving dynamics are very sorted. Expect around 200km on a single charge with the 24kWh battery version, and around 150-160km with the smaller battery version, so with 30-40km daily usage, you will barely need to charge the vehicle twice or thrice a week.

However, in the absence of home charging, we'd recommend you to opt for the Exter instead, simply for its smoother and refined engine, lighter controls, and higher seating. Sure, the Tiago CNG is likely to be more efficient, but the Exter CNG doesn't fall behind. Expect the Exter CNG to return around 22km/kg in the city and 30km/kg on the highway.

My preference is AMT due to city traffic and pain in my knees(more in left knee) and I have home charging facility as well so Tiago EV and Tiago CNG AMT both suits required Exter however is manual but as you suggested controls are very light and easy going and engine is also decent Please advice

Choose cng amt, traffic nowadays is a knee harassment, do some exercise and stay healthy

Can I get the mirror-to-mirror width with both the mirrors open and folded? My parking space is only 8 ft wide.

The width of your parking space is 8ft, which is about 2.44 metres. That is quite tight for most modern cars, especially with the mirrors open. For example, a typical midsize SUV like the Kia Seltos or Hyundai Creta is around 1.8 metres wide without mirrors, and with mirrors open, the width can go up to around 2.1 metres. With an 8ft width, you'll have very little clearance on either side, especially if you need to open the doors, so you'll need to park close to the passenger-side wall to have enough space for the driver to open the door and enter/exit. The good news is that most modern cars have electrically folding mirrors, so you can fold them in before entering the parking space. With mirrors folded, the width drops back to the body width, which is usually around 1.8 metres for most SUVs and 1.7 metres for smaller hatchbacks and sedans. If you want a car that is genuinely easy to park in an 8ft space, you should look at smaller hatchbacks like the Maruti Suzuki Swift, Hyundai Grand i10 Nios or Tata Tiago. These are around 1.7 metres wide with mirrors folded and will give you more breathing room. The key is to make sure the car you choose has electrically folding mirrors and to get into the habit of folding them before entering the parking space.

The higher seating position makes ingress and egress easier, visibility is excellent, and the AMT gearbox is smooth enough for city traffic. The cabin is more spacious than the Swift, especially in terms of headroom and rear seat comfort, and the ride quality is better over broken roads. Compared to the Wagon R, the Exter feels more premium, better built and more refined, while still offering the same ease of use and practicality. The Swift is a good car, but its lower seating position and tighter rear seat make it less suitable for your needs. The Wagon R remains a practical choice, but the Exter is a clear step up in comfort, safety and overall ownership experience. Go for the Exter AMT, and you will have a car that is easy to live with for many years.
