Dear Autocar Team, I am currently an ICE vehicle owner and am planning to switch to an EV. Since driving range is my biggest priority, I have narrowed my choice down to the Tata Harrier EV. I was particularly impressed by its ride comfort. At the moment, I am leaning towards the Fearless 75 ACFC variant and am also receiving some attractive offers on it. My question is: is it worth spending an additional Rs. 2 lakh or so for the ADAS variant? I undertake highway trips roughly once a month, but my day-to-day driving is mostly in city and rural conditions. Given my usage pattern, is it worth stretching my budget for the Empowered variant?

The Harrier EV is a good bet if range is a concern on your first EV as its large battery gives you a comfortable buffer even on highway journeys. And yes, as you've pointed out, the excellent ride quality should be helpful for your everyday use on city and rural roads. As for spending Rs 2 lakh extra for ADAS on the Empowered version, we don't think it's essential, as your highway use is only occasional, and even then, given how unpredictable highway conditions are, it's real-world efficacy is limited. There are few more features you'll lose out on too, like the larger 14.5-inch touchscreen, a powered tailgate and heads-up display, but these are more convenience features than essentials. The Fearless variant is very well equipped too, including with Cruise Control, which is really the feature you'll want on your highway runs. In conclusion, if you're getting the Fearless 75 at a good price, we think you should go for it.

The Kia Syros is a great option for tall occupants. It's got a relatively high roof and will make you feel immediately comfortable. The large glass area also helps, and you can adjust the steering and seats to find a comfortable driving position. Space at the back is also more than adequate for tall individuals. This Kia car also has other plus points like a well-finished cabin, a good feature set and peppy turbo-petrol and efficient diesel engines. Ride comfort is on the firmer side, though.

I'm looking to buy a 7-seater vehicle, preferably a diesel automatic or a long-range EV, that I can comfortably use for around 2 lakh km. One of my key requirements is that all three rows should offer comfortable seating, as the vehicle will often be used for family travel over long distances. I'm also concerned about the future of diesel vehicles in India, especially since I frequently travel to metro cities like Mumbai, Pune, and Ahmedabad, although I live in a Tier-2 city. My budget is around 27 lakh. Considering my driving pattern, long-term ownership plans, reliability, running costs, comfort, and future regulations, which vehicle would you recommend?

With 3,000km a month and mostly highway driving, a diesel automatic is still the most sensible choice. At Rs 27 lakh, the Kia Carens Clavis diesel automatic is the best fit. It is one of the few cars in this price range that genuinely offers comfortable seating in all three rows, which is critical for long family journeys. The diesel engine is refined, efficient and well-suited to high-mileage highway use, and the automatic gearbox is smooth and reliable. Kia's service also has a good reputation in India.Alternatively, consider the Mahindra XUV 7XO. It has a more powerful diesel engine, is packed with features and rides superbly. However, its third row is not as accommodating as the above-mentioned Kia car.An electric car can work for your needs, but you will need to plan your stops around charging. Charging infrastructure is improving, but it is still inconsistent in places. Overall, the Kia Carens Clavis diesel automatic is the best fit for your needs.

Hi, we are a family of three living in Pune, where traffic is extremely congested. Our budget is 15-20 lakh, and we're looking for a car, preferably a hybrid, with good fuel efficiency. I'm 6ft 2in tall, so cabin space is also important. We currently own a Kia Sonet HTX Plus. What would you recommend?

Given your height, the family of three and Pune’s congestion, the Maruti Suzuki Victoris Hybrid is the most sensible recommendation. Its hybrid powertrain delivers excellent fuel efficiency in stop-start city driving, while the light controls and comfortable ride make it easy to live with every day. Headroom in the front seat is adequate for someone who is 6'2'', but it will feel a bit tight in the back seat. If you are the one who is driving, then it shouldn't be an issue. The sunroof also takes away a little headroom, so it's best avoided. The other drawback is that the boot is on the smaller side for the segment, but for a family of three, it should still be manageable.If you don't mind compromising on fuel efficiency, the Kia Seltos IVT is also worth considering. It is not a hybrid, but a reliable and comfortable SUV with a spacious cabin and a strong ownership reputation. However, given your focus on fuel efficiency in heavy traffic, the Maruti Suzuki car remains the stronger recommendation.

I'm planning to buy a small automatic car for my wife, who is 5'1" tall. The car will be used mostly in the city, with occasional highway trips. Which would be the best option?

For your wife, consider the Hyundai Exter. At 5'1", she will benefit from its good all-round visibility, light steering and compact dimensions, which make it very easy to manoeuvre in city traffic and tight parking spaces. This Hyundai car also gets driver's seat height adjustment from the base trim, which will be very handy for your wife. The AMT gearbox is smooth enough for daily commuting, and the car is very easy to drive. Fuel efficiency is decent; expect 9 to 10kpl in the city and 15kpl on the highway.If you want something a bit more efficient, consider the Maruti Suzuki Swift. In our testing we managed 12.7kpl in the city and 19kpl on the highway with the AGS. However, height adjustment for the driver's seat is only available on the ZXi trim onwards.Overall, the Hyundai Exter AMT is the better fit for your requirements. It is simple, reliable, easy to drive and well-suited to both city use and occasional highway trips.
