I have been driving a Hyundai Venue diesel manual for the last 4 years. My yearly running is around 12,000-15,000 km, with the majority of it on highways. My fuel economy over the past 40,000 km is around 19 kpl. I am planning to switch to the Syros EV. Is this a good decision? Will it work out in terms of running costs when the higher purchase cost of the new EV is taken into account? Or do you suggest that I stay with the diesel?

With 12,000-15,000km a year and mostly highway driving, your Venue diesel is already delivering excellent efficiency at 19kpl. The Syros EV will certainly reduce your running costs per kilometre, but the higher upfront cost of the electric car is significant and will take several years to recover through fuel savings alone. On highways, diesel cars remain very efficient, and the Syros diesel is already a proven, reliable package. The Syros EV is expected to embody the same strengths of the ICE model but with some improvements, but the financial case is not compelling enough given your usage pattern. Moreover, EVs are better suited to city use, and on long highway journeys, you could be dependent on the public charging network, which is not always reliable or even available. Moreover, while the Syros EV is expected to be efficient, its relatively modest 51kWh battery is likely to give a real-world range of less than 450km. Unless you have a strong desire to move to an EV for other reasons, we would recommend you stick with a diesel model for now. It is still the more sensible ownership decision in your case.

@aradhya Go for Venue because it is much cheaper than syros EV. Secondly the power that venue diesel is delivering with good milage is superb combination.

The diesel engine will deliver significantly better real-world fuel efficiency on highways compared to petrol automatics, which is important given your running. The 3XO is also one of the most spacious and comfortable compact SUVs, with a wide cabin that makes it a genuinely comfortable five-seater for long journeys. This Mahindra car is also one of the safest cars in the segment, with a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating, and Mahindra’s service network and maintenance costs are reasonable. The diesel automatic is a torque converter unit, which is smooth and reliable, and the car is well equipped with useful features without being overly complex. If you are absolutely set on petrol, the Hyundai Venue in its top-spec HX10 guise, with the turbo petrol automatic option, is also worth considering. It is a newer car, has a fresher design and a nicer interior as well, and gets all the bells and whistles that you get on the Mahindra. Efficiency definitely won't be as much as the diesel version, but if a turbo petrol is what you want, the performance is very good on the Venue. The Venue also has a diesel option that is worth considering. Although it's not as punchy or as good in performance as the Mahindra, it will still give you much better efficiency than the turbo petrol.

Since you already own a Kia Carnival, you could consider the Syros EV. It is a compact SUV that's surprisingly spacious, and gives users the flexibility to slide the rear seats to accomodate more luggage, if the need arises. It spans a broad price range, and is available with two battery packs - both should be suitable for your usage. It has a healthy range, and with one quick charge, you can easily manage the occasional 500-600km long trips.

I am looking to buy the top-spec Punch EV, but I am willing to wait for Hyundai's upcoming compact EV if it is priced in a similar bracket. Is it worth waiting, or is the Hyundai likely to exceed the Rs 15 lakh price bracket?

Yes, it is worth waiting. Hyundai has now confirmed that its new compact EV, codenamed HE1i, will debut by the end of 2026. It will sit below the Creta Electric and compete with the Punch EV, Nexon EV, XUV 3XO EV and Syros EV. It will also get standard- and long-range versions.The interesting part for you is pricing. Current expected pricing puts the Hyundai at roughly Rs 10–14 lakh in Delhi, depending on the battery/variant, although these are still estimates and not Hyundai's official prices.So if your ceiling is around Rs 15 lakh, there is a good chance the Hyundai will fit, including a higher-spec version. It should also be more spacious and better suited to your requirements than the Punch EV.

I am planning to buy a sub-compact SUV. My budget is Rs. 13-14 lakh, and my priorities are a smooth automatic transmission and good mileage. I am considering the Brezza ZXi AT, Sonet HXT DCT, and Venue HX6 DCT. I am very confused because the Brezza’s torque-converter automatic offers good fuel efficiency but lacks some features, while the Sonet and Venue offer all the features I need. However, I am concerned that the DCT may be less fuel-efficient and could involve higher maintenance costs. My daily commute is around 30 km, mostly in heavy bumper-to-bumper traffic. Go for the Maruti Suzuki Brezza ZXI AT. Your priorities are a smooth automatic, good fuel efficiency and a daily 30km commute in heavy bumper-to-bumper traffic. The Brezza’s 6-speed torque converter automatic is the best fit for this usage. It is smooth, reliable and well suited to stop-start conditions, and the naturally aspirated petrol engine is efficient and easy to live with. Maruti’s service reach and low maintenance costs add to the ownership peace of mind.The Sonet and Venue DCTs are good cars, but the DCT gearbox is not ideal for heavy traffic.
