Hi Autocar, My budget is Rs. 15 lakh on-road. My daily commute is currently around 10 km, but from next year it will increase to around 40 km in Pune. I am considering an EV, and I stay in a rented apartment with EV charging facilities. My current choice is the Tata Punch EV Empowered variant. Would you recommend the Punch EV, or are there any other EVs in this budget that would be a better option for my requirements?

Hi everyone, I'm planning to buy my first EV. I was initially considering the Tata Punch EV, but I'm 6'4" tall, and I found the driver's seat and overall driving position a bit cramped for longer drives. I'm open to stretching my budget a little if it means getting a more comfortable car. My requirements are: comfortable for a 6'4" driver, real-world driving range of around 350 km, good value for money, suitable for both city driving and occasional highway trips. What would you recommend? I'd also love to hear from tall owners about their experience with cabin space and driving comfort. Thanks in advance!

The Tata Punch EV is a great value proposition, but at 6'4", you are already experiencing its biggest limitation: cabin space. The driving position is upright, and the seat does not go low enough, which can become uncomfortable on longer drives. Since you are willing to stretch your budget, the MG Windsor EV is the better fit. It offers a significantly more spacious cabin, a wider and more comfortable seat, and a more relaxed driving position. Range is one aspect where this MG car doesn't really hit the 350km mark. Around 300km is what you can expect in normal driving conditions. Highway trips will have to be planned well. The screen inside dominates the dashboard. It is a more premium product than the Punch EV, but the extra spend is justified by the comfort and space.The other option is the new Kia Syros EV. It might seem compact, but the interior is surprisingly spacious, even for tall adults. The battery is a 51.4kWh unit from the bigger Clavis EV, so 400km in one charge should be possible. The rear seat space is also excellent, and the quality of the cabin, along with the usability of day-to-day functions, makes it a very strong contender.

I have a new 2024 Swift model, and it is now 2 years old. After switching to E20 fuel, I feel that the mileage and power have reduced. My monthly fuel expense is around Rs. 7,000- Rs. 8,000, and my monthly running is approximately 1,200 km. Should I exchange it for a Tata Punch EV?

The Tata Punch EV is worth considering, but only if you have access to reliable home charging. At 1,200km a month, you're driving enough to benefit from the significantly lower running costs of an electric car, especially if you're currently spending Rs 7,000-8,000 on fuel. The Punch EV is a genuine upgrade over the Maruti Suzuki Swift in terms of ground clearance and overall practicality, while also being much cheaper to run. However, before making the switch, it's worth checking whether the drop in mileage and performance is actually due to E20 fuel or if the car needs a service, tyre pressure check or air filter replacement, as a two year old Swift shouldn't see a dramatic drop in efficiency. An aftermarket CNG kit isn't something we'd recommend as it can affect the warranty, reliability and resale value of such a new car. The only drawback with this Tata car is that it makes sense only if home or workplace charging is available. Overall, if charging isn't an issue and you're planning to keep the car for a few years, the Punch EV is the better long-term choice.

I'm planning to buy my parents an electric city car. I've had serious doubts about Tata's after-sales, so I am not considering the Punch or Nexon at all. The budget is 15-17L OTR; what safe and well-equipped options should I consider? Another primary consideration is that service visits and niggles shouldn't concern my 60-year-old father.

The new Kia Syros EV would be a good option to consider. It comes with a 51.4kWh battery pack with good range and performance, and the HTK Plus will be only slightly more expensive (around Rs 1 lakh), which is worth stretching for. This Kia car also has easy ingress and egress, so it is comfortable for the elderly to get in and out of. It has compact dimensions; the seat height and comfort are good, and the light steering makes it very easy to drive and manoeuvre in the city.Kia also has a good reputation when it comes to after-sales and service, so it won't be a hassle either. We recommend the Syros EV as it fills all the requirements you have. If you don't have a need for the larger battery, the HTX will fit comfortably in your budget and gets all the necessary features as well.

I currently own a Skoda Kushaq Petrol AT. Everything is fine except the mileage. I am getting only around 10-13kpl with E20 petrol. My daily running is around 100 km. Should I buy a diesel car or an electric car?

With a daily running of around 100 km, fuel efficiency becomes a major factor in ownership costs. The Skoda Kushaq petrol automatic is a good car, but the 10-13kpl you are seeing is typical for a turbo petrol automatic, especially with E20 petrol. At this usage, a diesel or a strong hybrid makes far more sense.If you do regular highway runs, a diesel is still the most practical and cost-effective solution. The Mahindra XUV 7XO diesel automatic would be the recommendation here. It is a strong highway car, comfortable, spacious and the diesel engine will deliver significantly better fuel efficiency than your Kushaq. Diesel running costs will be far lower over your kind of mileage. If that is out of your budget, something smaller like a Kia Seltos diesel, while not as powerful, is even more efficient.If your usage is mostly city a strong hybrid could be a better solution. The Maruti Suzuki Victoris is the most practical and cost-effective option. It is well priced, has a proven track record and will dramatically reduce your running costs. The strong hybrid is better suited to the city, where it is more likely to run on its electric motor than use the engine and deliver the better mileage.

I’m planning to buy an EV with a budget of Rs. 19 - 20 lakh. My heart says the Tata Sierra EV Pure 63, but my mind says the Kia Syros top variant because of features like ventilated seats. Kindly suggest which one would be the better choice.

The choice really comes down to your usage and what you value in the car. If you need more space for both passengers and luggage and have a few long drives that you would undertake, then opt for the Tata Sierra. It is a much larger car and has a very spacious interior. The ride quality is also very good over both bad city roads as well as high highway speeds. If, however, your usage is mainly going to be within the city, then the Kia Syros is the better buy. Its compact footprint will be much easier to manage while driving congested streets, and finding parking would be easier. You would also enjoy the top variant of Kia car and its features.

Go for the Maruti Suzuki Brezza automatic. It is the better fit for your requirements. You want a naturally aspirated petrol engine, good mileage in both city and highway driving, and a spacious car for three people. The Brezza delivers on all those points. The 1.5-litre petrol engine of this Maruti Suzuki car is smooth and reliable, and the 6-speed torque converter automatic is well suited to Indian driving conditions. It is also a more spacious car than the Honda Amaze, with a wider cabin and better rear seat comfort for three people. The higher seating position and SUV stance also make it easier to drive in the city and over bad roads.The Amaze is a good car, but it is a compact sedan and does not offer the same level of space or practicality. The Brezza is the more complete package for your needs.
