Hi, I currently use a 2019 Kia Seltos DCT petrol, and my annual running is around 24,000 km. I am currently looking for a new vehicle and am planning to switch to an EV. I have shortlisted the new MG Tomahawk 7-seater and Mahindra XEV 9S. Which one would you suggest? Or should I consider a diesel instead of an EV? Charging can be done predominantly at home. Kindly advise.

The MG Hector Tomahawk EV is a well-priced EV that's equipped with a 69.2 kWh battery and has a claimed range of 517km. On paper, it certainly looks promising; however, we're yet to test it extensively to pass a definitive judgement on its dynamics, comfort and real-world performance and range.

Since your Rs 20-30 lakh budget permits, we'd still recommend you opt for the 70kWh or 79kWh battery version of the Mahindra XEV 9S. It has been on the market, and Mahindra EVs have been around for a while now. The Mahindra XEV 9S offers more tech and features; its motor is more powerful; and in our tests, it has consistently managed around 480km of real-world range.

It offers a proper torque converter automatic, strong highway performance, good ground clearance and a comfortable ride, making it a meaningful upgrade over the Altroz Turbo Petrol. The wide cabin also makes it a comfortable five-seater for long journeys.The key trade-off is the boot space, which is one of the smallest in the segment. If luggage capacity is a priority, the Maruti Suzuki Brezza automatic is the better alternative. It offers a reliable ownership experience, good ground clearance and a comfortable ride, but the engine is less powerful and the overall driving experience is not as engaging as the 3XO.Overall, the 3XO strikes the best balance between highway comfort, performance, ground clearance and value within your budget. With 8,000-10,000 km a year and mostly highway driving, a diesel SUV makes the most sense. The Mahindra XUV 3XO diesel is the best fit here. It is a genuinely good highway car with strong performance, good stability and a comfortable ride. The diesel engine is fairly efficient and well suited to long-distance driving, and Mahindra’s service reach is strong. The 3XO is also one of the most spacious compact SUVs, with a wide rear seat that makes it a comfortable five-seater.If you are willing to stretch your budget, the Kia Seltos diesel is worth considering. It is a larger SUV with a more premium cabin and better long-distance comfort. It is the better car overall, but it comes at a slightly higher price.

With a weekly running of around 650km, your annual usage is roughly 33,000km, which is quite high. At this level, a hybrid makes a stronger financial case versus a non-hybrid petrol. That said, unfortunately there aren't any (strong) hybrid options in the Rs. 10-15 lakhs budget, you've mentioned. We'd recommend you to look at diesel options instead - Kia Sonet, Hyundai Venue, and Mahindra XUV 3XO, are excellent options you can consider. Alternatively, you can consider the Maruti Suzuki Brezza CNG, which is also an economical option.

The Seltos also offers better rear seat space and comfort than the others, making it a better choice for occasional family trips. The bigger question is whether diesel still makes financial sense. With the narrowing price gap between petrol and diesel, the payback period is longer than it used to be, but at your mileage and highway bias, it still adds up. If you are keeping the car for 5-7 years, you will see the benefit. As for automatic versus manual, go automatic if you want ease of use in city traffic; modern torque converter automatics on diesels are smooth and reliable in cars like the Kia Seltos and the Hyundai Creta.
