I want to buy an automatic car and drive about 50 km daily in the city, with 3–4 highway trips a year. I have shortlisted the Nexon Pure+ AMT, XUV 3XO AT, Brezza AT, Amaze VX CVT, and Fronx Delta AMT. Mileage and build quality are important to me. Please advise which one would suit me best.

Of your shortlisted options, the Honda Amaze CVT is the best bet. Its 1.2-litre i-VTEC petrol engine is among the more fuel-efficient of the cars selected here, with only the Maruti Suzuki Fronx Delta AMT offering higher mileage.

However, the Fronx AMT gearbox is not as smooth as the Amaze's CVT, which will be beneficial in city driving. The Amaze, like all Honda cars, has good build quality, with high-quality materials and great fit and finish.

With your requirement of keeping the purchase cost as low as possible while also getting something reliable, go for the Honda Amaze CVT. The CVT is smooth, the car is easy to drive, and Honda’s ownership experience is among the best in the segment. It will also be the most affordable option on your shortlist, which fits your budget constraint perfectly. It should be more than sufficient for your parents and their usage, but bear in mind, it's not much larger than the Figo they're moving from, so it may not feel like as much of an upgrade. Also, make sure entering and exiting the vehicle are not an issue for them, as it is quite low-slung.The Elevate CVT is the largest vehicle here, and as such gives a bit more space and comfort than the others, and it meets your other requirements, but if you're locked in on the V CVT variant, it might feel a bit barebones. The V CVT is well within your Rs 17 lakh budget, so consider going up a variant, as that would make it worth your while.The Maruti Suzuki Brezza, however, might be your best bet. The ZXi AT is great value for money; efficiency and hassle-free ownership are Maruti hallmarks, and the 6-speed AT gearbox is as smooth, if not smoother, than Honda's CVT. I want to buy a car for my family and am confused between the Honda Amaze VX CVT and the Maruti Swift ZXI+ AMT. It will be driven 80% in the city and 20% on the highway. This will be the first automatic car in my family. My priorities are ease of mind, efficiency, and concerns regarding ethanol blending. I have driven both cars but am still not sure which one to choose.

Go for the Honda Amaze VX CVT. With 80 percent city driving and this being your first automatic, the Amaze’s CVT is its biggest advantage. It is far smoother and more predictable than the Swift’s AMT, especially in stop-start traffic, and that makes a big difference to daily comfort and ease of use. Honda’s ownership experience is generally strong, and the car is well suited to long-term ownership.The Swift ZXI+ AMT is the more efficient car, but the AMT gearbox is not as smooth in city conditions. Being a hatchback, it also has a smaller boot than the Amaze. If that is a concern, look at the Dzire instead, which is essentially the Swift in sedan form.Overall, the Amaze VX CVT is the more refined driving experience, while the Swift/Dzire is the more fuel efficient choice.

I am confused whether I should buy Maruti Suzuki Fronx or Tata punch for city driving and long drives.

Go for the Maruti Suzuki Fronx. It is the better all-rounder for both city use and long drives. The Fronx is more refined, has a smoother engine and gearbox, and is more comfortable on the highway. It also has a larger boot, which makes it more practical for long trips. The Punch is a good city car with a tough build and a comfortable ride, but its engine feels underpowered and it isn't as refined. The Fronx is also more fuel efficient and has Maruti's wider service network, which makes ownership easier. Overall, the Fronx is the more balanced car for your needs.

I am confused between Creta SX IVT and Elevate CVT for 8000 km of annual running with long trips of 1200 km 3-4 times in a year for a family of 4. Apart from this, day to day usage is less than 100km per month. I am looking for a car for long term ownership and travel comfort.

The Creta SX IVT is the better fit for your requirement. It offers a quieter, more refined cabin, comfortable rear seats and a smoother CVT, which are particularly valuable when spending several hours on the highway with four people and luggage. Autocar's long term experience with the Creta petrol IVT also found it refined, comfortable and particularly well suited to road trips.The Honda Elevate CVT has advantages of its own. Its 220mm ground clearance, long travel suspension and large 458-litre boot make it particularly good on poor roads, while its naturally aspirated 1.5-litre engine and CVT make for a relatively simple powertrain. However, the cabin is noticeably noisier, particularly when accelerating hard, and the CVT can produce the typical rubber band effect.

My current ride is a Fluidic Verna diesel manual, which is nearing 15 years of ownership and has clocked nearly 2.5 lakh km. My usage consists of mixed city and highway driving, with around 40km daily and weekend highway runs of about 400km. For long-term ownership, which would be the better choice: the manual or automatic?

The diesel engine is well suited to your high running, and the automatic gearbox is a proven torque converter unit that is reliable and well matched to the engine. This Mahindra car will make your daily city driving far less tiring, while still being smooth and efficient on the highway. Coming from a 15-year-old Hyundai Verna diesel manual, the automatic will feel like a significant upgrade in terms of comfort and ease of use, without compromising on long-term reliability. The manual is still a good option if you strongly prefer the engagement, but for your usage and ownership horizon, the automatic is the smarter choice.

Go for the Maruti Suzuki Victoris ZXI automatic. It is a well-rounded SUV with a reliable naturally aspirated petrol engine, a smooth automatic gearbox and Maruti's extensive service network, which makes ownership stress free. The Creta S Optional IVT is a good car, but at this price point you are getting a lower variant with fewer features, whereas the Victoris ZXI is a higher trim with a better overall value proposition. The Victoris also offers a comfortable ride, good fuel efficiency and a hassle-free ownership experience, which is exactly what you want from your first car.
