I am planning to buy a car. Should I opt for the Mahindra XUV 3XO 1.2L torque converter or the Kia Seltos 1.5L CVT? I mainly drive in the city with occasional highway trips. Please answer considering the following: mileage, which transmission is better (torque converter or CVT), service experience (Kia vs Mahindra), comfort, engine smoothness, and reliability of the CVT vs the torque converter, as well as the overall reliability of the cars.

Pick the Kia Seltos 1.5 CVT for mostly city use because it feels smoother in traffic, the 1.5 is very refined, and its economy will be more consistent when you crawl, stop and go. Kia’s service experience is generally quite good, too.

In the real world, expect the Seltos CVT to do roughly 10-11 kpl in the city and 14-15 kpl on the highway if you drive gently. As a turbo, the Mahindra XUV 3XO auto can dip into single digits in stop-go traffic, although it can match the Seltos IVT's efficiency on open roads.

The Kia Seltos is also the larger car, which will give you a more spacious cabin and boot, and a more premium in-cabin experience. Hence, between the two, the Seltos is the one to get.

Go for the Kia Seltos. While they are both similar SUVs that use the same engines, the Seltos is a larger vehicle built on a newer platform. It thus offers better space and comfort, as well as new-generation tech, which the Creta will only get when its next-gen model is launched in 2027. It also has a higher-quality interior with better fit and finish. Depending on the engine, gearbox and variant you choose, you may find a few more features in the equivalent Creta compared to the Seltos, but overall value for money, the Seltos should still come out on top, considering its inherent benefits. That said, some reasons you might want to opt for the Creta is because you already own a Hyundai and are already in their system, and have an established relationship with the service centre. Also, if you are planning to exchange your i20, ask the dealer for a loyalty bonus or any other deal they might have; this could swing the purchase in favour of the Creta.

The on-road price of the base Clavis HTE petrol might be a bit more than Rs 13 lakhs. However, as a family car, it beats all the other options. It is more spacious and gives you the flexibility of a third row of seats, which you can also fold down and make use of a huge boot space. Purely as a sensible, practical option, it is hard to beat the Clavis' proposition.Alternatively, Syros is an excellent, well-packaged car that's surprisingly spacious despite its sub-4-metre footprint. While its design isn't universally appealing, if you don't mind its styling, this is an excellent choice. You will get a well-equipped HTK+ turbo-petrol manual version.The Seltos and Tekton belong to a segment above and are larger cars. Only their entry-level variants will fall within your Rs 13 lakh budget. So you need to decide whether you need a seven-seater, a well-equipped sub-4-meter car, or an entry-level five-seater mid-size SUV from a segment above.

I'm interested in buying the Hyundai Creta base model. My monthly usage is around 2,500 km. What is your advice?

Since you're on a tight budget, the Hyundai Creta base E variant is quite good. It packs in all the safety features, and all the bare essentials, making it good value for money. Its petrol engine is smooth and refined, and its light clutch, steering and gearbox make it very easy-to-drive. Overall, the Creta is a car you can't go wrong with.Do keep in mind that the Creta is due for a generation change, and the new version will be launched early 2027. The new car will be a bit larger in size, will look completely different, and is likely to have more equipement too. So that could be worth waiting for.Alternatively, you could consider the Kia Seltos HTE, which is priced similar to the base Creta, it shares its powertrain with the Hyundai, but feels a lot more modern and more spacious in comparison.

A city fuel efficiency of 13-15kpl with the air conditioning on is slightly on the lower side for a Wagon R 1.0, but it isn't necessarily a cause for concern, especially if you're driving in Lucknow's city traffic with frequent stops and the AC running throughout your journey.Your 20km daily commute should be enough for the engine to reach its normal operating temperature, but fuel efficiency can still vary depending on traffic conditions, idling time and driving style. We'd recommend checking that your tyre pressures are maintained at the manufacturer's recommended levels, avoiding hard acceleration and excessive idling, and using good-quality fuel from reputed fuel stations.

I am planning to buy a family car. Should I choose the Toyota HyCross or the Hyundai Alcazar? Please suggest.

Go for the Toyota Innova HyCross. For a family, it simply works better as the cabin is roomier, the third row is actually usable for adults, the ride is smoother, and the hybrid saves a lot of fuel in city traffic where most family cars spend their time. Long trips feel easier too, and Toyota’s hassle-free ownership and resale help over years.Pick the Hyundai Alcazar only if you’re on a tighter budget or you want a slightly smaller, easier-to-park 3-row. It’s great for four or five with the third row used occasionally, and the diesel suits heavy highway use. But the last row and boot are tighter, and it doesn’t feel as plush or relaxed on bad roads.One honest trade-off with the Innova HyCross is the higher price and possible waiting period, and the boot with all three rows up isn’t huge. If that stretch and wait are okay, it’s the better family car overall.

I am confused between the Kia Seltos and the Maruti Suzuki Victoris. I am also unsure whether I should buy the base variant and customise it or choose a mid variant with the necessary features. I live in Chennai and drive around 1,000 km a month, with a 50:50 split between highway and city use. I like the Seltos for its design, interior and premium feel, but the Victoris seems to offer better fuel efficiency. Please suggest.

Pick the Kia Seltos mid variant. With half your running on highways, the Seltos feels calmer at speed, gives you more confidence, packs in more performance, and, as you mentioned, the cabin is more premium. At 1,000 km a month, the Victoris' better mileage likely saves only around Rs. 1,000-2,000 monthly, so the nicer drive and cabin may be worth more.Go mid variant rather than base-plus-accessories. Safety and basic features like a proper touchscreen with Android Auto, rear camera, cruise control and more come integrated, work reliably, and stay within the standard warranty. Aftermarket bits rarely work as well, and you cannot add some safety features later.If your main priority is fuel efficiency, the Maruti Suzuki Victoris will help keep costs low. Just know it is not as quick for highway overtakes and does not feel as rich inside. For your city-highway split, the Seltos mid variant is the sweeter long-term pick.
